Does verizon dsl cap the amount you d/l?

I recently switched to Verizon DSL, recently my router/modem/accesspoint keeps resetting itself. i'm wondering if it's because they cap the amount i upload/download. I am running a picture server that is a personal one, and this could be a problem if they cap data uploads/downloads. Also, it feels as if they are capping newsgroup speed too...is this true?

verizon just did a big network upgrade and the connection isn't very stable anymore for anyone. as for usenet...i hit full speed all the time.

Why don't you call them and ask? Jesus, it's like everybody thinks that their service provider does all this covert sh|t and has some strict don't-tell-the-customer policy or some bullsh|t like that. For fvck sake, ASK YOUR PROVIDER!

calling them now....and i just wanted to ask a quick question to my fellow anandtechers. instead of calling and being kept on hold for a hold load of time. i don't need some d!ck like you to give me an answer like that.

I do have Comcast. I just don't run to anandtech every time I muse a question in my head.

Comcast has been having some issues lately. I still see sporadic DNS problems.

:light:
:Q

LETS ASK ON ANANDTECH WHAT THE PROBLEM MIGHT BE instead of calling the provider and finding out for sure! GREAT IDEA!!

Well, maybe you have a local number, but everytime I called that day the line was "busy" which means they disconnected it. Plus I didn't start that thread.

Yup, it was disconnected for me. Well, technically it was busy, but I find it funny the day they have nationwide issues the line just gets "busy" for 5 hours straight.

I tried 1-888-COMCAST and 1-800-COMCAST. Same result. I even tried the "local" number that takes you to the menu thing to get help, that was down too.

Comcast is teh sux0r.

They're not teh sux0r, they just didn't anticipate so many people calling in. That's what happens when a multi-line phone number gets flooded. You still have to specify how many lines that multi-line number is going to be using at max. Calling 1-800-comcast forwards you to a local call center. The 1-800-comcast number is probably set up for hundreds of thousands of simultaneous callers, but there's no need to pay that kind of money for their local lines. The local lines were probably flooded with people calling in going "I can't get my pr0n you bastards!"

You could always have gone down to the local call center and demanded to speak to a supervisor

they don't cap the total... but there is a physical limitation to the speed of course. Even if they say they are up to 3.0Mbps down, if you are further than 12k feet away from your CO, you're still limited to the 1.5Mbps down (like me). :| FIOS is coming here soon though.

Nah, it's like 30-40 mins away. And it closes at 5 or 6 anyway, so it would've been too late.

They would have closed the door on me if they had seen me coming anyway, I've called and had chats online so many times in the past month that even though my name isn't on the account, they ask if it's Alex calling.

They cap my uploads and downloads. I used to have 768 Kbps DSL and I got about 80 KBps max download (which sucked ass) Verizon now offers 1.5 Kbps standard to compete with cable, even though 1.5 Kbps is still slower. When my mom recently renewed the service, they upgraded us to the 1.5 Mbps (they didn't change anything of our hardware or phone line), so now i can get about 150 KBps max. I also have increased upload. Now DSL has 3 Mbps DSL, I'm gonna call them and see if I can change my service to that, since it's the same price per month; however, based on my previous experience with them, they'll probably screw me and make me stay with the 1.5 Mbps. I hate Verizon, and their customer service people are mostly stupid, rude, ignorant bastards.

Your chances of getting 3 Mbps are tied to how far from the central office you are.

But in order to get it, he still must attempt to ask for it. They don't automatically up people even if they qualify.

i have a 1.5mb connection from them (granted i live in southern maryland).. for me at least, i know of no download caps

I'm actually a new subscriber, and they told me that i qulify for 3mb download. I still keep getting reset, looks like the dhcp keeps releasing and renewing.
