There's actually a law in the US that protects your right to install 3rd party hardware on OEM system. OEM manufacturers must still warranty it.

there should be a sticker on the back corner of case that says if you break it (to open side cover) the warranty is void.

Dell does not sell PC's for upgraders
You break the seal - you are on your own

what model

did you buy new from Dell?

I just went thru all this with a friend who wanted to put a new big HDD in a 2 month old Dimension. Round white sticker on corner. He had paid for the $200 "come to you" warranty package and I told him thats gone when I break the seal. I recommended against it, at least until the war ran out.

BS, there is NO seal on a Dell pc. Upgrading it does not void the warranty. Trust me, I've sold well over 400 Dell computers in 2005.

There is no seal I agree no seal.

Dell will not void your warrenty like someone said theres a law that you can with out voiding your warrenty. Now dell will say they dont support the hardware that you put in. and thats it.

Alienware is a whole diffrent story you scream at them on the phone they void your warrenty "sir dont scream cuse your system was delayed 2/3 of a year and the part you waited 2/3 of a year came defective on dilivery." Fvcking crazy oww and also they were suppose to give me 300$ gift card to amazon or bestbuy but I never got one(for copensation)

Overpriced boutique wannabe crap. Cases look like some gaudy crap you'd win on the midway. Their service sucks in such a way that light cannot escape.

Also, they dropped me on my head as a baby. :D

Exactly. It's called the Magnuson-Moss Act, and it allows you to put whatever brand of hardware in your system as an upgrade, and prevents the OEM from voiding the warranty in doing so.

http://www.kingston.com/branded/magmoss.asp

Now, if you have a problem with your system and the faulty part is the upgrade, then it should be fairly obvious that the warranty on your system wouldn't cover the faulty upgrade. However, the act of upgrading your system wouldn't void the warranty. So if, say, you upgrade the video card in your system and the hard drive dies, then you should still be able to get the hard drive replaced under warranty assuming the warranty period hasn't expired.

Well, I went back out to my friends office today, and sure enough I was wrong.
He has 4 computers in use and it was the e-machine PC that had the sticker - both it and Dell under the desk and I wasnt paying attention to which one we were dealing with.

My bad.
Oh, well - heh heh
