Does ultimate use 4 cores?

Does Vista Ultimate Ultimate utilize four cores? Or does any OS utilize the quad core processors? I am still trying to debate if it is worth it for me to get the quad core CPU.

XP Home/Media/Pro and Vista Basic/Premium/Business/Enterprise/Ultimate Will Use 4 cores or more.

The difference is Home and Media Center in XP and Basic and Premium Vista cant take 2 physical processors.

I think the question you are asking is will they actually be used up, and that depends on what you are running. Supreme Commander uses 4 cores. Video encoding can use 4 cores. Playing an old game... 1 core, browsing the internet and listening to music... less than one core...

What are you going to be doing with it?

Photoshop is multi threaded from what I understand. Might want to try googling information about the specific filters and algorithms you frequently use

Get a fast single core or go quad.

The dual cores are beneficial but only to a limited degree. Many apps written for multi core are running 3+ threads. Those not written for multicore are often 1.

Depends on the app though.

I'm running 8 cores with Ultimate, so yes it will.
