Pure speculation on my part here, but there are reports that the Trump administration is very toll road friendly, and I'm curious whether Trump would support plans for a national, privatized Interstate system in his infrastructure bill. I think this would totally stroke his ego... He'd make his mark for generations. The question is whether this would overlap with some current interstates (based on right of way already secured) or be completely separate.
I'm not sure I'd be totally opposed to this. Imagine a private autobahn with more exclusive access. The operating contractors can be given leeway to determine access rules, rates and speed limits with some sort of national standard (I.e. no cars older than 10 years old). The operator could also require vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to infrastructure support to allow autonomous driving high speed lanes. You could be zipping along at 100mph while surfing the web, and not worrying about slow trucks or plebs with crappy insurance. American automakers might even get a leg up on foreign competitors if they are allowed to include 5 years of Trumpway access in the purchase price of new, compatible cars.
Of course, Trump prefers to undo whatever Obama does, so he'd probably divert funds from those high speed rail projects. Do you think he'd be audacious enough to try?
