We should do something like that in the US, maybe $10 a month extra and remove all ads from TV?

They already do this. It's call PBS and it's done by donations.

The networks would never accept such a thing. They make more money doing their ad sales than with a $10 monthly fee.

PBS isn't really the same... HBO and other pay channels are though. Only real difference is that it's done via cable rather than over the airwaves, and so enforcement is different.

PBS is exactly the same, except done by donations. I can choose whether or not I get HBO, but I get PBS regardless. According to what has been explained about the BBC is that you get it (and in this case pay for it) regardless of whether or not you want it.

ah come on. 10 pounds a month is nothing for excellent shows like topgear and BBC news. i pay $30 a month for DSL just to get topgear! how do you think they filled up the GT40's tank?

ok maybe i exaggerated a bit...

I read it as more that they use hard-sell tactics, sort of like AOL in the US... we certainly don't all have AOL though, thankfully. PBS operates on non-obligatory donations, not a set fee. Pay channels such as HBO are a closer approximation.

Quite. The quality of the BBC's programming (and the little things, like their title graphics) is so much higher than most other TV stations in the world- look at David Attenborough's programs, for instance.

Maybe if PBS had mandatory donations we would get a lot better programming.

The quality of PBS is also top notch, but because they don't have enough money, they can't produce the amount and variety of stuff the BBC does.
