Does this sound like a PSU going bad ?

As above,my Aspire X1301 turns on for seconds then turns off for no reason.
I've applied new thermal paste yesterday to see if this would sort the problem & looked like it did.I had the pc on all day without any issues & turned it off last night & went to bed.
Woke-up this morning & turned the pc on,but it turned off within 2 seconds with no bleeps.
I then turn it on again (5 seconds later) & it's working as should :-/
Using Speedfan to check temps, they look ok.
I also did a ram test last night & it can back as no issues.
Running Windows 7 x64 with onboard 9200GPU & 4GB Ram.

Do you guys think it maybe the PSU ?

These pc's come with poor 220w psu's running quad cpu's (2.6GHz) & can run games like COD,GTA & L4D2.So do you think the PSU is a little poor for such games & has been burning it's self out over time :-/

No, probably not the PSU. The mobo is the most likely culprit - failing caps on the mobo will give the symptoms described.

I've looked at the motherboard & I don't see any caps burst or even ready to burst.
I've also no way of testing the pc with another motherboard.
Will any mATX motherboard do as long as the cpu fits.
Looking at this model number I've still not found what socket the cpu is ?

I take it it's out of warranty?

You can find needed system info by right clicking on My Computer -> properties. Or just install CPU-Z.

Yes but they don't tell me motherboard details & Everest software can't read the motherboard as well :-/

Pressed the power button on this morning & the computer came on & has been on all day with no problems.
Even added an external hdd to it today for the kid to watch movies.
I know that once I turn it off it may not start-up again :)

It could be the PSU, I had one years ago that I presume didn't supply stable enough voltages so I'd end up having to turn the PC on several times before it would stay on. That was when I decided not to go with cheap PSU's.

I know nothing about PSU's but I'm guessing it could be sending out high or even low voltage on start-up at times. With the psu only being a 220w playing these sort of games for 2 years sounds like it's a big demand for such a poor psu.

What is the spec of your machine? (CPU/Graphics card etc.) And what does the PSU say it is capable of under the 12v rail? should be on the side of the PSU.

It's onboard 9200 graphics & the CPU is 2.6GHz x4.
I've tried a Corsair TX-750w PSU & still getting same problem & so looks like the PSU is not the problem :-/

If those voltages are accurate they do look well within range, even though the PSU itself does like it would be close to it's limits if you stressed the computer (14A x 12v =168W on the 12v rail). do you know the make and model of your CPU?

If the problem is intermittent then my next thought would be the motherboard, although it could possibly be a component that is causing the startup issues. I had 2 hard drives that if they were plugged into the same molex wire would stop my computer starting up, they were fine if I used different wires. This was back in the day before I had a PSU with separate rails.

The PC has been running fine for the last 2 days & has been on for around 14 hours each day :-/
The CPU is AMD Athlon (tm) II x4 620

til i get a new psu, i'm using a liteon 350W w. q6600 and bfg 8800gt to do file backup/ transfers.....only light activities as to not stress/ melt the psu

what kind of psu are you planning to replace with, OP?

Was thinking of placing the hardware in to a bigger case & then adding a HD 6950 due to the motherboard being a mATX it would never fit in this case I have just now.
I would be using the Corsair TX-750 PSU due to the GPU I would be using.

May also just sell it all & start again,so not got a clue what i want to do :-/

Today is the 3rd day in a row I've had the PC on without any problems.
