Does this sound like a dead MotherBoard or CPU

Trying to build a new system..I have Built many systems before and never encountered a DOA Board or CPU
My problem is I try to boot and get no post. The cpu fan and video card fan tries to spin quickly but then stops. I tried to unplug everything and leave in ram and cpu the cpu fan tried to spin for about 3-5 seconds this time but then just stopped. Now the system board led light indicating power won't light. Tried another PSU and the board light now is on but I can't boot and the cpu fan doesn't even try to start up.

My new system is Asus M2A-VM Motherboard, AMD athalon x2 4850e am2 cpu, 4Gigs Kingston ddr2 pc2-6400 800mhz ram, Thermaltake purepower 500np Psu, (second PSU I tried is Antec neo 480 W. The CPU fan is Amd Foxconn rated for AM2, Video card is ATI radeon x850xt

I am sure everything is plugged in right, cpu seated fine, artic silver thermal paste....Even tried just 1 stick of ram and reset the cmos but no go.....Only question is on heatsink fan it is a 3 prong and MB has 4 prongs but it fits on fine and clips in. Please help.

Bought everything from NewEgg got it yesterday.

Make sure all your power connections are seated ok, both mobo and VGA. Reseat the CPU, try each stick of RAM individually.

Thanks ch33zw1z, I tried all those ideas several times. Doesn't work. Even took Motherboard out of box placed on safe surface, left cpu heatsink/fan attached. attached psu power connectors and tried to boot. Got nothing although the green led light on Motherboard was lit. I think I will RMA back to newegg. All in one package I got the CPU, Motherboard, and 2 sticks of RAM. Any of those components could cause a no post....so I guess I should RMA them all. Any other thoughts?

I've only built 4 or 5 machines but to me sounds like a mobo problem. Can you test individual components (ram, cpu, etc) on a motherboard you know is working?

I recall my first build and I ran into this . I was new at it then many years ago and did not notice I did'nt have the front connector wires hooked up properly. Have you made sure to have them hooked up to the mobo and case correctly?

hondaf17, I wish I could do that but these components are newer than any other system I have. Ram is ddr2, cpu is different socket, etc.

Pugh, I have done the same exact issue in the past...I did make sure they were hooked in right. I even used a screwdriver to short out the power switch prongs which is suppose to start up the system.

I was going to suggest you maybe had something shorting it out somehow, or maybe the mobo was seated properly on those little pegs that go into your case (I'm blanking on the technical term) but I know you said you tried it with the mobo out of the case to no avail. Crappy, but I'd start the mobo RMA process.

Anyone have the athalon x2 4850e running on the asus m2a-vm motherboard? Just wondering if it's a mismatch. the cpu is an am2 and the mobo takes am2....But, I can't find any information related to if this specific am2 will work. AMD doesn't list recommended mobo's on its site for the cpu.
