Does this mean my neighborhood is getting hyper-gig internet Fiber now ? (2 Gbps and 5 Gbps tiers)

Curious if anyone knows. Doubt it but at least I tried. I did email them but they could not tell me :( We already have normal Fiber I guess you could call it. 300 Mbps, 500 Mbps and 1 Gbps (1000Mbps) tiers currently.

No I doubt I will get the higher 2 Gbps or 5 Gbps tier but nice to know the option is there for the future or if the price goes down for those tiers.

Just found out from AT&T live chat support (surprisedly) that that is what is happening.

I did not expect them to know.

Most likely getting FTTH. I remember when we got that here I was quite excited. Funny thing is I'm on the lowest tier now in order to save money. 20/15 meg. Still way faster than the 5/1 DSL I had and more stable too. DSL is very dependent on line conditions so it can change a lot over time.

Hell you could probably run all of Twitter on a 5gbps connection!

Xfinity is doing some big upgrade in my neighborhood tomorrow... supposedly internet will be down all day.

At least they gave a heads-up this time I suppose.

We already have FTTH.

Anyway the Fiber went down.

Hope to see new speed tiers once it comes back up or a few weeks after!

Thankfully we have backup internet. Slow but it works.

i would cry if my fiber went down.
Once on fiber, you can't really stop.
The upstream is very addicting, especially when you do a lot of cloud stuff.
This is why i can never go back to cable.

I remember when broadband first came out and i was like one of the first on it though MediaOne.. you would have to drug and shoot me to go back on dialup.

That's what the Xfinity tech told me last Wednesday when my service was down. 2Gbs cables already installed across town by the post. Same with AT@T, but using fiber cables. But he mentioned "who needs those high speeds, maybe just businesses" He installed a Xfinity MoCA filter to isolate my internet to my neighbors internet. I'm at the 800mbps/25mbps tier. Just wish my upload speed was higher.

Seriously... 25MB up? Are we still in early Y2K?

All other fiber companies, offer bidirectional bandwidth.
Meaning you typically get the same or simular upstream as downstream.
And cable company can do so also. They don't do it because they assume everyone will torrent the hell out it.
You have no idea how nice it is to have a high upstream, especially if your cloud storage frequently.
Having Bi-stream 1GB is such a godsend when your uploading large GB files.

ISPs seem to have a big thing against the idea of people running services off the connection so that is one of the main reasons they tend to skimp on the upload I think. Though another also has to do with the type of technology they use. It's just asynchronous by nature. But yeah, it would be nice to be able to get more upload, and be allowed to run services. I would love to be able to get something like a 100/100 connection at home with a block of static IPs and be allowed on the TOS to run services, but they don't seem to allow that at all at least not on fibre. You can get a business DSL line that allows you to do that, but... it's DSL lol.

What do you mean by "services"? You mean like a small business?

Anyway, we have AT&T fiber, 1Gbps up and down. The faster up is the best part...also, our IP address hasn't changed in over a year since we got it installed.

There is a option in AT&T that allows you to get a locked IP tho.
I think a lot of people are using it to bypass the modem, and go direct link to the Ont to your layer 3 managed switch.

But again, my modem allows a IP Passthough, so i can use my own firewall behind it and have it act as a modem and not a router, but im sure there are more professional people which would require a direct connection to the ONT.

would love to be able to get something like a 100/100 connection at home

That's the sad part... there are almost 0 cable providers i can think of that will give you 100mb up, even on a 1 or 2gb connection plan for residential.
This is the main reason why i left spectrum a long time ago, and been on AT&T Fiber ever since.

If you want 100mbps upstream you need a business class, and the price for that was at least 4 times if not greater then what im paying now for my residental 1gb/1gb.

They don't even offer business fibre here sadly. Otherwise I'd actually pay for that so I can host all my web stuff at home. Need static IP blocks to do it properly too so you can host DNS at home as well. My current fibre service has a DHCP lease of like 10 minutes, you look at the modem funny and your IP changes lol. It's a pain since I have to log into my web server to update firewall rules and such as there are a few things like phpmyadmin that I restrict to only my IP as an extra security layer.

I was on DSL for 13 years and it was rock solid. Switched to cable when I moved house, and after more outages in 6 months than I'd had in my entire time on DSL, I went back to DSL. And that was in a town 1/6th the size of yours.
