The people who are starting college this fall across the nation were born in 1982.

-They have no meaningful recollection of the Reagan Era and probably did not know he had ever been shot.

-They were prepubescent when the Persian Gulf War was waged. Black Monday, 1987 is as significant to them as the Great Depression.

-There has been only one Pope.

-They were 11 when the Soviet Union broke apart and do not remember the Cold War.

-They have never feared a nuclear war.

-They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up.

-Bottle caps have always been screw off and plastic.

-Atari predates them, as do vinyl albums.

-The expression "You sound like a broken record" means nothing to them.

-They have never owned a record player.

-They have likely never played Pac Man and have never heard of Pong.

-They may have never heard of an 8 track. The Compact Disc was introduced when they were 1 year old.

-As far as they know, stamps have always cost about 33 cents.

-They have always had an answering machine.

-Most have never seen a TV set with only 13 channels, nor have they seen a black and white TV.

-They have always had cable.

-There have always been VCRs, but they have no idea what BETA was.

-They cannot fathom not having a remote control.

-They don't know what a cloth baby diaper is, or know about the "Help me, I've fallen and I can't get up" commercial.

Feeling old Yet? There's more:

-They were born the year that Walkmen were introduced by Sony.

-Roller skating has always meant inline for them.

-Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show.

-They have no idea when or why Jordache jeans were cool.

-Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave.

-They have never seen Larry Bird play.

-They never took a swim and thought about Jaws.

-They have no idea that Americans were ever held hostage in Iran.

-They can't imagine what hard contact lenses are.

-They don't know who Mork was or where he was from.

-They never heard: "Where's the beef?", "I'd walk a mile for a Camel," or "De plane, de plane!".

-They do not care who shot J.R. and have no idea who J.R. was.

-The Titanic was found? They thought we always knew.

-Michael Jackson has always been white.

-Kansas, Chicago, Boston, America, and Alabama are places, not rock bands.

-McDonalds never came in styrofoam containers.

-There has always been MTV.

-They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter.

I was born in 78 and I remember everything you mentioned. Used to play Pac Man at Pizza Hut when I was little, saw the challenger blow up on Live tv in my 3rd grade classroom, remember watching Dallas with my mom, that whole dream season was a crock.

I remember the 500 point drop on Black Monday, allthough at the time, it didn't bother me hehe. (now if that would happen, I would go ARRRGHHHHGHGH!)

I remeber watching Family Ties and seeing Ollie North take the oath.

I remember Thriller when it was new.

There will always be a soft spot for Reagan in my heart, though I was born halfway through the Carter administration, Reagan is the man who was president through my formative years, and for the longest time, he was the man.

I remember Mary Lou Retton when she got her medal.

My oldest sports memory is the Brewers 82 dream season that ended in game 7 of the Sud series when they lost to the Cards.

I am SO glad that I got to enjoy the 80's, that decade was FAR above the 90's as far as coolness goes.

I was born in 1962, I remember all of that and more, and no, I don't feel old. Have a child and you'll feel young again. I've got a 3 year old daughter and I'm having a blast playing with her and all her cool new toys. Of course it can be kind of a drag when she takes over my computer and won't let me play.

Gen Xer's were born late 1960's early 1970's. We are the ones after the boomers whicn were from 1946-1964. I think they are pushing Gen Y for people born in the 1980's.

You old people must think that anyone younger than 20 is ignorant or something... A lot of that assumes a lack of knowledge. I am only 16 and barely half that list applies to me.

One of my major accounts a couple of years ago was the NYC school system.
Many of their school offices still had dial phones. It was funny to watch the poor little gradeschool kids trying to figure out how to use a rotary phone.

I think it's great that some of the youngsters remember these things. Hopefully it will help them appreciate all they have today!
On the subject of age, my Grandfather just turned 86! Just think about all the things/changes people his age have seen. :Q

I can make a lot of you feel young!

I remember 3 popes
I HAD to learn to use a slide rule.
I voted for Nixon.
I remember the day Kennedy was shot
I remember the day we got a TV
I remember when Eisenhower was president.
I remember sleeping out in the summer and watching Echo and Explorer go over.

Shall I contine?

damn... wish I could have been there.

As for the list, I know about 80% of it. And considering this forum, I believe that most everybody knows what Pac-Man is;):)
