Does this make any sense to you?????

Ok here goes?.

http://tiger.towson.edu/~hzaidi1/compare.pdf

I was on fueleconomy.gov site. I?m pretty sure these EPA estimates are accurate considering these are coming from the federal government. You would expect if you are going to drop near about 20K on a ?Hybrid? you?re supposed to get superior gas mileage?.. Or at least that is what most people who purchase these kinds of vehicles are looking for.

So your telling me a 14yo car is getting better gas mileage than a 2008 vehicle that features various technology that was not really used in a vehicle that is 14 years old. Your better off dropping 2K instead if all your looking for is gas mileage!!!!!

Have you ever seen those 2 cars? The metro is tiny with a 1L 3 cylinder engine, 0-60 is "ya right", the civic's performance is reasonable, and its gotta way 1000kg more.

Yeah I know one is a 3 cylinder and it's also a manual based on the suzuki swift. I guess this vehicle never lasted because American's don't like small cars.

The new civic is much larger, safer, more comfortable, cleaner running, and faster than the old metro. Also check the curb weights.

LOL, (apples and oranges)^infinity. One is a modern car with creature comforts, a safety system, is more efficient for the power output, etc. The Metro, on the other hand, is an underpowered tin-can death trap with no creature comforts.

Things the Civic has over the Metro XFi
Passenger side view mirror
automatic transmission
airbags
air conditioning
17.1" of extra wheelbase
29.3" of extra length
7" of extra width
3.9" of extra height
978 pounds of extra curb weight
66 missing hp
The ability for occupants to survive a low speed collision with a Toyota Yaris

No, americans just aren't as suicidal as you think

Sure, it returns great mpg, great. But that's all.

If mpg is all you care, that sure will do the job, but for most of us (who are smarter buyer than the one who only cares about mpg), we consider mpg, style, performance, comfortable, convenience, and the biggest part, safety.

Modern engines provide more HP per volume and are way cleaner burning, longer lasting, lest frequent maintenance etc
The rest of the car around it has too many variables to even try to compare

According to a review I read back in the late 90s, the old 3cyl Metro required you to constantly floor the accelerator to maintain highway speed.

No, the Swift/Metro didn't last because American's don't like crappy cars.

The Swift/Metro had severe reliability issues with the 3-cylinder and zero comforts (no power windows, no power locks, no A/C, crappy radio, cheap vinyl seats, etc) along with almost no interior room. It was not a comfortable car to be in, and it was not a fun car to drive. It sacrificed everything for fuel economy.

The Civic Hybrid, however, has power everything, a high-end stereo, powerful A/C, sufficient room for adults in the back seat, and is relatively fun to drive.

The Swift/Metro was a car you bought if you had no other choice. The Civic Hybrid is a car that actually has desirable qualities in its own right.

I knew a kid that had one in highschool. The fastest he ever got it going was 70mph down a very long hill. Up the hill, it was doing a cool 45mph.

Yeah, they only sold it for 13 years...

A co-worker got one for his long commute, I saw him on I-95 one day in the right lane
with a semi crawling up his ass, going 65. I asked him the next day why he didn't speed
up and he replied "that WAS WOT"...Oh, these cars used feedback carbs, the ones the
rest of the auto industry ran away from when FI became available because they sucked
so bad..

Funny story:
A friend of mine got a ticket for doing 80MPH up an 8% grade in one of those 3 cylinder metros... and lost in traffic court.

Airplane confused his car with someone else who got off the freeway at the exit after my friend got on. "Pretty sure" is enough for a traffic court conviction.

Those are "new epa" ratings, if you look at the old EPA ratings for the metro, you'll see that it actually gets pretty close to a scooter. And if you look at an Insight hybrid, then you'll see that the Insight gets better mileage than a scooter.

As others have mentioned, the newer Civic weighs significantly more and has nearly double the power.

But the Metro was a poor option even in its time. Honda's own Civic VX hatchback had 50% more power, creature comforts, superior safety, and still managed to come get 56 MPG highway on the old ratings and 50 highway on the new ratings. It had Honda's first VTEC-i system and only weighed roughly 2000 pounds, the same as the Insight. Unfortunately, they have all been destroyed by ricers looking for low weight.
