Does this look legit to you (particularly UK members)?

Just got this email.

Dear Denis,

Sorry to email you out of the blue. I am a BBC Radio Producer in London, and I wanted to contact you about a programme we are making for BBC Radio 4.

Radio 4 is the UK's largest speech radio station, and ours is a long-running series presented by a writer and journalist called Jon Ronson. Perhaps you are aware of his work - you can find out more about him at www.jonronson.com . You can also hear previous programmes we've made for the series there, but to summarise it, it's about real people, and real stories. Jon is interested in the reasons people do the things they do, because ultimately we all do quirky things, its part of being human.

I was fascinated to read about your internet hoax, and wanted to get in touch. There have of course been many attempts to foil web-users, to create false identities etc, but the difference is that yours was more successful than most. I wondered if you might agree to talk to Jon about what you did, and how you now feel, all these years on, about the event.

It would be great, first and foremost, to be able to have a brief chat on the phone - perhaps I could give you a ring at some point? Let me know a good number.

Once again sorry for the unsolicited email but I very much hope to hear from you soon.

Very best wishes,

Lucy

And should I say yes?

I am inclined to do so if this is a serious program - might prevent others making the same mistake - but not if this is trash radio like Howard Stern or Rush Limbaugh. Looks serious enough at first glance and I respect the BBC. There also the fact that this involves the community, mods and some members who were deceived more than others so I'd like opinions from those concerned also, because I respect them very much, before I proceed. Your opinions matter in me making this decision.

So what do you guys think?

Pssh, why the fifth ( holy timewarps batman) post for when you can get the first post from me. 😉

Seems legit from my quick Googling. What kind of e-mail address did it come from?

Why not? It might be good for kicks. Even if it is a Stern type show, that could be fun also. Just don't take is seriously :^)

What was the hoax? You can always contact radio 4 and ask if Lucy works there, and to speak with her.

You've been here since 2003 and never heard the story?

Wow.

The hoax and its aftermath were brought to the surface again recently here in ATOT for serious, less emotional discussion by the oldtimers who were victims of it but the thread died before I was ready to write a detailed account for 'historical' purposes. Being somewhat of a pack rat and archivist, I do have much material (emails, photos, etc..) still saved from this period, both on my computer and on paper. Reading though all this proved emotionally very draining though.

BBC Radio 4 is extremely serious and dry, harldly 'talk radio' in that sense, so if you're worried about being mocked or something you're okay. On the other hand you'll be giving some very real investigative journalists licence to dig into your life... you got anyhting else you wouldn't want the world to know?...

That hoax is the worst thing I've ever done. However, it is part of a pattern of tall tales I was telling at the time and some of this might reflect badly on me or make me look silly. Still, this is the past and that behaviour is gone now.

That's what I've decided to do. I am inclined to go forth with this. Depending on the modalities of the interview, this would pretty much answer the questions put forth in the most recent thread on the incident.

Then, I found reading all my old emails again too draining emotionally and ended up not writing the blurb I intended to elucidate matters. Maybe I'll manage this time. I also think it might be easier to express all the events, ideas and emotions orally rather than in writing.
