It was a toss-up between OT and General Hardware, but anyway... here goes:
I am looking for a portable multimedia device with the following characteristics:
A) MUST-HAVE
- under $300
- no bigger than a PSP
- on the light side, not heavy like a brick
- capable of playing audio and video clips in several popular formats, without re-encoding (especially without re-encoding to some proprietary crap)
- a display big enough to show off those said videos, and large enough for the device to serve as a portable e-book reader (PDF, DOC, LIT etc)
- great battery life - at the very minimum 4 hrs., even if you play videos with it, 10 hours or more, if you read documents...
B) Not necessary but useful:
- large storage capacity (10 GB or more)
- some good GUI and button functions
- some USB/1394 connection to PC (for file transfer)
- Wireless internet access (good for hotspots etc.)
- Some games (Java ?)
- A/V inputs, outputs or both (!)
Too much to ask for? Do these features exist at the $300 price limit?
I know that an UMPC from OQO, a Toshiba Libretto, a Samsung Q1, or an ASUS would probably do all these, but they're way too expensive... and I'm not sure about battery life, either...
