Does this beer taste like bitter piss because I don't like IPA's or what?

Before you give up on IPAs, try a west coast style IPA. Stone IPA or Bear Republic's Racer 5 are solid choices.

West coast style IPAs tend to use a lot more late addition and dry hopping with hop varieties that have citrus characteristics.

the fact you have a local craft beer bar....makes me so damn jealous.

No kidding. I live in a state with a 6% ABV cap. I'd love to get beers like that. We have to go on beer vacations and bootleg to drink that at home. I also homebrew to attempt to make beers I can't buy.

Most American made IPAs tend to turn the hops flavor so high that is just plain crushes any other supporting flavors. The taste of hops alone is pretty overpowering and it needs to have some sort of counterpoint(s) flavors. European IPAs tend to be much better in this reguard, yes the hops note is stronger but it it dancing with other partners. Try a Belgium style IPA if you want to give hops another chance.

Out of all beer styles, IPA does rank pretty low on my list. Personally prefer stouts, porters and hefeweizens the most.

not the beers I usually drink (mass produced stuff: newcastle, asahi, other asian beers, corona, to some extent heineken/stella)

yeah, those beers are rather horrible. Still, IPA is not for everyone. Frankly, most of them these days are just too excessively hopped. It's like the damn MP farce with digital cameras. Too much MP, too little substance. basically: the industry is doing it wrong.

Maybe try some MmmHop and tell me what you think?

Could be too hoppy for you, so you may not be an IPA guy. Most IPAs are pretty hoppy, some more than others.

KT

srs, i hate HATE IPAs and most pale ales. i only like hops as a background taste, and prefer dark, heavy beers. dogfish head makes some amazing beer, but i wont touch their IPAs.

/get a theobroma, or santo palo marron. seriously.

IPAs aren't for everyone (Personally, I disliked them at first, aquired a taste for them and loved them, and now I dislike them again for some reason). But if 90 minute is too bitter for you, I seriously doubt that you're going to like any other IPAs. 90 minute IPA has a huge amount of malt presence in addition to the hops. With the majority of IPAs, all you're going to taste is hops.

Couldn't stand Theobroma. blech.

my favorite styles are (Baltic first) Porters and all types of Stout. Then of course anything Belgian and the various Ales.

There are some IPAs that are incredible, but the mass of them are hopped beyond flavor. I think Mad Hatter is a great IPA, in that it has really strong Malt character.

yeah, I've gone back and forth with IPA. It was all I would drink for some time--shortly after getting into beer, actually. Then stayed far away for a few years, and now I find that the hop bite gets my mouth watering again.

Odd with NS1, because I find most people I know that dig the dank ganja, prefer IPA over all other styles. (Hops and cannabis are within the same family--very, very similar taste profiles). Seriously, the smell of either tends to get my mouth watering in the same way, and I smoke very little these days. Then again, so does a smashed skunk; a also very similar scent profile to the herb, and gasp--sometimes dog poop. lol

A lot of those I haven't tried. I am not an IPA fan by and large, though I've found some tolerable.

Old Rasputin is GODLY though. And it's a bargain at $5/pint (if those are true pints). There's another similar beer called Mephistopheles that's also amazing, but I don't see it on the list there. Mmmmmmm.

dank ganja doesn't taste like bitterness, just lemon-y pine sol goodness.

yes, those are pint prices. They go on and on about "honest pints" too. I'll def hit this place up next time I go out and check out some of these brews.

An Honest Pint

We take beer pretty seriously at Tony’s and it is apparent in everything we do. An American pint is 16 fl oz and that is the minimum that you’ll get when you order a pint here. Tony’s Darts Away is certified as a purveyor of full pours by The Honest Pint Project. Our certificate has been proudly on display above the bar since the day we opened. For more information visit www.honestpintproject.org.

If you are interested in learning more please ask your bartender or read our version of Honest Pint FAQ below.

So, why isn’t my glass filled all the way?
We use a 19.75 fl oz glass so that we can assure that you get the full 16oz you paid for and a healthy head to boot. Some joints pour beer in a 16 fl oz glass or smaller and that’s fine unless they bill it as a pint*. Our patrons enjoy all the beer they paid for without sacrificing the important foam^.

It's not the bitter--that is overriding the ganja taste that you very much get in hoppy bear. You just have to...expose yourself more, I guess. 😉

Or get your hands on some super fresh hops to know what I'm talking about.

Hmm. If you actually like the PineSol taste, then you may want to try some more IPAs. Stone Ruination tastes pretty close to how PineSol smells IMO. Although that is a REALLY extreme IPA.

 It gets so where I can't drink many IPAs these days without thinking about herb.
