The only thing that sucks about Xbox as a media center, is no remote power switch.. I know you can hack one in there, but it is still ghetto

In XBMC, when you are at the main menu, you can go back to the dashboard, reboot or shut down. Also buy a cheapo wireless controller. I love my setup!!

To turn it on smart guy.. 🙂

It doesn't play VCDs 🙁

That's my only complaint. But it does play DiVX.

if you have modded you xbox to play divx it will play vcd becase I have no problem playing them with my xbox

I have a 1.5 w/ a SmartXXv2 chip and I?m pretty sure the DVD drive is a samsung. It does pretty well recognizing burned DVDs, its just movie playback will pause sporadically with my cheaper quality ones; unfortunately I have a lot of movies backed up on those. So for I?ll have to use my Minitek DVD player in lieu of XBMC ?

how do you get the progressive scan if its modded? i patched my DVDX player with this patcher that apparently lets the DVDX default.xbe file run in progressive scan. is that the only way, or is there another way? i heard XBMC supports progressive scan, but if you click on "PLAY DVD" it freezes, although i heard you can load the .ifo file just fine and it will play fine that way. i heard that a few days ago and just never tried it yet though.

EDIT: and i'm assuming my pscan is working fine. i hadn't played a DVD on my new 480p capable tv until i had patched the xbe file, so i don't know what it looks like in comparison on my tv w/out the patch. so i would like to test a sure shot method to watch movies in 480p on my tv, thanks.

Not really.

I have used multiple DVD Players, and they are all pretty bad. It always has to do with the controls (using the stupid XBOX controller) and the way it stretched the picture, or the way the borders are handled. I have found that a standard DVD player usually works better.

On the other hand... It DOES work, and it works well... just not as easy/good as a regular DVD stand alone player.

Why are you using the xbox controller when you could be using the dvd remote?

i would just stick with XBMC. be sure to change the skin to the non-windows one though. i rem reading somewhere that xbmc crashes or locks up a lot with that skin.

okay so it does use progressive scan for sure? yea i was using the default skin witth it ... i only ran it a few times before i heard it crashes when you do "RUN DVD" . ill check that out later, thanks.

well, in XBMC, you have to go to settings, then i think the section labeled "user interface" and change the display to 480p. dont use 720p/1080i.

just rem to change the skin. i dont know if they fixed this problem by now, but its a shame cause the windows media center skin looks pretty sweet.

i dont think they fixed the problem because the version i have is the newest one, i got it this past week on sunday night. but ill change the settings and stuff when i get home to mess around with it, thanks.

yup 🙂

i went w/the 50" samsung DLP HL-P5063W. i could not be happier!!! this thing looks MONSTROUS when in my basement, especially compared to the way i saw it in the store next to the bigger tvs.

the HD is AMAZING, i had never seen HD until i hooked up comcast HD the other night. one thing is that the ESPN HD is not NEARLY as good quality as other HD stuff. the wizards game on Comcast sports network in HD was breathtaking, it was so clear, and even WS. LOST in HD was incredible too! i love it!

Oh yea, and xbox games at 480p in WS are pretty cool too 😛

I use XBMC and the XBox DVD player as well. Hard to gauge visual quality-my tv is merely ok and is not a good reference set. Same for audio, though I have a great audio system, I can't tell a big diff between in and my old dvd player.

Works fine for me. I got a "broken" xbox from my uncle that I've used as the DVD player in my bedroom. The only gripe is that the fan is louder than the noise you would get out of a standard DVD player.

Yeah, same with my PS2... But other then that... works fine...

Kind of retarded using a controller to navigate, but the remote kits are cheap.

i'd say it's ok, but doesn't give you all the options a regular player does. course i never used any of those, so do i care? lazy answer, tho, you actually have to turn the unit on MANUALLY and insert/eject discs MANUALLY. plus you can hear the fan during quiet passages in a movie. still, having one device (xbox) beats having two (xbox + dvd player).
