I've seen many reviews but I can't seem to find out whether it actually unlocks like the x800 one. Anybody know?

Unconfirmed. ATI have neither confirmed nor denied it. It's pure speculation at the moment.

I would not expect all of them to unlock, but perhaps in a GTO2 part they might, where they have been binned separately.

if it does unlock, it would most likely require a hardmod like the x800pro, but probably dosent unlock.

It probably won't unlock. ATI and Nvidia(although nvidia has nothing to do with the x1800gto) both now laser cut the pipes on their lower-end graphics cards because they know from the past not to make their video cards to where people can unlock them. Like Unlocking the 6800 AGP's pipes and making it almost a 6800GT, unlocking the X800GTOs to make them go X800XL or further depending on the OC, among other cards that unlocked.

Unlikely since the only reason some of the GTOs unlocked was because ATI was trying to get rid of as many of it's old cores as possible (specifically R480 and R423). I don't think this is the case with the X1800GTO.

I read on B3D that Hardware.fr received an x1800GTO with an ATI bios that disabled the quad from an X1800XL for review, I'm not sure if other sites got the same product. The retail cards may indeed have lazer cuts to prevent enabling the quad, but it seems possible that moddable cards may hit the market. Link

Proof that 7600GT is better: http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/nvidia_geforce_7600_gt_performance/
That's with stock clocks. Get an OCd version (I recommend EVGA as you can OC even further them without voiding the warranty) and we're talking about something that destroys the X1800GTO.

And some very happy mid-range card owners.
