Does the spelling bee affirm the English language as great, or awful?

There are very few languages in which you'd have a legitimate spelling be, since English derives its words from a wide variety of sources, whether it be Latin, Greek, etc..

Certainly you wouldn't have a spelling bee in Vietnamese, as every word is spelled exactly as it's pronounced, or even French/most European languages, at least not at a national competitive level.

Does this make English an overly complex language that has too man rules/variations, or does it make it great with its uniqueness?

I think it shows white people love nerd games.

It affirms my belief that people will go to extreme lengths to find something at which they're the best.

True, that's just because they're smarter. We invented spelling bees, though. We also invented yahtzee and scrabble. I think.

i think the moderator was mispronouncing words. epicrisis was not at all pronounced how you would think.

Spelling bees are a sideshow. Does anybody really take them seriously? You could seriously tell anybody you know that you were a spelling bee champion in 4th grade and nobody would care.

English is a cobbled together mess. We should just go back to Latin. Look how much the Romans were able to accomplish without having to worry about "I before E except after C".

On that note, you can bet on the Spelling Bee Final word on the ESPN Streak For the Cash.

Will the final word be....
9 letters or less
10 letters or more

Ha, someone posted the expectancy of it too:

Over the last 25 years, these are the totals for final word length

4 letters - 1
6 letters - 3
7 letters - 1
8 letters - 3
9 letters - 6
10 letters - 1
11 letters - 3
12 letters - 3
13 letters - 4

Average word length - 9.52 letters

9 letters or fewer - 14
10 letters or more - 11

Hard to go with a majority, but 10 letters has to catch up at some point 🙂

I honestly don't care what you say, these kids are smart as hell. Some of these words are really really hard, and we're only in the 3rd round.

it just means those kids have given up any kind of social skills in order to excel at something that is completely irrelevant as an adult

Yes.

This is why I like Slavic languages... spelt as it sounds. well, southern ones at least. russian has some vowel funkiness.. but still much more uniform of a system vs. english.
