Does the seltzer-seagull thing really work?

Supposedly if you feed seltzer to seagulls... they exploded in mid-flight from the gas that is created by seltzer coming in contact with water. Is this true?

DISCLAIMER: No seagulls were harmed in the making of this post nor should they be harmed.

Awww...

I have no idea; however, my youngest son told me that he was told that the seagull tries to burp, but can't. As a result, the bird dies. :(
