Does the nF4 chipset runs hotter than nF3 chipset?

Hello everyone,
I had the DFI nF3_250GB and it had only a thin aluminum passive heatsink on it. I overclock to 325FSB fine. I now have the eVGA SLI board and it has an active but loud little fan on it. I wonder if the nF4 chipset on the eVGA SLI board can be cooled with just the same passive chipset cooler as the DFI board? Anyone knows or have any idea to cool it passively and still overclock ok? The problem is when mount my video card on the PCI_E X16 or any of the PCI_E slot, the video card is right over the chipset cooler. Putting a bigger and taller chipset cooler will prevent the video card from installing. I have the VGA silencer on my video card.

Thanks.

The nForce4 runs much much hotter then the nForce3. The only passive heatsink that has a chance of cooling it are the larger Zalman units, even the I'd recommend against overclocking.

mine runs at 45c idle with a fan and heatsink. I wouldn't try overclocking or even just putting on a passive cooler.

I had a Zalman ZM-47J Northbridge Chipset Heatsink on my DFI Lanparty SLI board and it ran at about 55 C with no air flow (fsb is was running at 270). So I added an 80mm fan and it ran at about 35 C. So, I decided to build my own custom heatsink (mainly because the Zalman was blocking my 1st PCI-E slot)

So, I took the h/s from my 7800gt and cut it to size and drilled a 2nd hole in it. Now, with no added circulation (just the 120mm intake fan is getting any air to it), it is running at 33 C.

So does that mean it's "dangerous" to buy a passively stock cooled NF4 board from ASUS or Abit?

No because they have heatpipes that funnel the heat to an even larger passive cooler

Evercool VC-RE or RF should do the trick, at least it does for NF4

I got the RE for my DFI ultra-D and it works wonders. It's high speed is ~7,000 rpm but with the guardian program that comes with the DFI boards I dropped the RPM's to 3,000 and it is almost dead silent. I turn all my fans (all 120mm) to 6v and my machine cannot be heard from 2 feet away (I love the P180 case). I have my opteron overclocked to 2.52 (9x280) and my chipset idles at ~42 and gets to 50ish under load. This is with running my intake and exhaust fans at the full 12v (yate-loons) so it's not silent but still very quiet.

One thing to note, my RE I had to adjust the RPMs to either 3000 or 4000, anything in between resulted in a strange vibration noise. I plan to get my temps down even more with some rewiring. I built my machine too quickly so my wiring job leaves something to be desired.

How much hotter can the nF4 be over the nF3? I wonder if I can risk running it with passive like the DFI nF3 board?

Thanks

It can be done, I've done it twice with this Zalman. Even with such a large heatsink it still runs pretty hot, I woudn't try with anything smaller.

Did you have to mod the cooler at all to make it fit, like cutting it or trimming the fins?

Thanks.

No I didn't. But the Aopen board I used places the nforce4 chipst in a better location then most boards.
