Does the monitor draw power from the PSU at all?

I've noticed in a few topics about monitors, people have asked what power supply the person had. Since monitors just plug into the wall, don't they simply draw all the power they need from the socket? Or is there something I'm missing here?

the monitor itself has either an internal or external power supply unit. the video card draws power if you consider that part of the monitor.

no power is drawn from the PSU, only the VGA/DVI signal itself is present in the cable.

Even for those old AT (and a scant few ATX) PSUs, that offer the secondary AC socket to plug the monitor into - the monitor's AC power cord isn't drawing any power from the PSU, it's just an AC extension cable, really.

Monitors, at least the ones I have seen, do not take any power from the PC PSU.

With respect to a UPS unit, you need to know the power drawn from the PSU as well as the monitor. May be that is what you have seen!

The only execption is the older Apple flat panel that had an ADC connector that drew power straight from the tower. Nothing like it exists in the Wintel world, though.

Most monitors have IEC, so its irrelevant

The ones that did plug into the PSU, just used a pass through/extension cable (like this) because the PSU had two IECs, one male and one female. You could just as easily plug the monitor into a AC outlet.
