I disagree. Look at the majority of people that are in the Marines, Army, etc.. A great deal are Southern boys from the rural south and let's not forget the Mexicans and Puerto Ricans. I bet those people alone make up 80% of todays armed forces.

Many people utilize the military as a way out of their economic circumstances. It affords a chance to better yourself, get decent training and in most cases do a job that you will be proud of.

Areas of lower income levels will by default be more suceptable to this type of inducement.
However, the military does have standards for their recruits.
The generic sterotype of "trailer park back country trash" people would not qualify for the educational and/or physical standards required.

There was a demographic breakdown published in the Defense Almanac a while back. The page has since been taken down. Anyway, I think the Army is 73% white and something like 8% hispanic.

The "Southern boys from the rural south" is also a misnomer. Many servicemembers acquire residency in Texas, Tennessee or Florida to avoid state income taxes. Most recruiting contracts are written for kids from urban areas.

Finally, to further dispel stereotypical myths, four of the accused soldiers in the abuse case are from north of the Mason-Dixon line (Pennsylvania), if I'm not mistaken.

<edit>I made a mistake. Apparently, my earlier numbers may represent DoD as a whole. The racial breakdown for the Army during FY 03 is as follows:

White - 59.3%
Black - 24.0%
Hispanic - 9.9%
Asian - 3.5%
Other 3.3%

Under Rumsfeld they are classified as 'Wheeled Estates"

They are found in scenic named places like 'DumpVista' or 'WreckingView'.

people in the military come from all walks of life. My family has members in the Army and Air force, my grandpa was a navy man in WW2, and they weren't from the trashy side of my family tree. But, like any large group of people, you're bound to have idiots. It's all in numbers

..Sure he'll be thinking of the sacrifices the trailer trash made the last Monday of this month--at least he gets a day off from work, so the trailer trash are at least good for something.
