Does the Microwave light ever burn out?

My parents first microwave had the light burn out after only six years or so, they never replaced the bulb, kept it another ten or so years. (what does the microwave light really do for you anyway?

Mine burned out after after 7 years. The microwave gave its last snap, crackle, pop, about a year later. Which was good, because now I have an under-the-counter model over the stove.

Can anyone explain to me why the under-the-counter models have such crappy lights underneath? The bright setting is about the brightness of a night-light = totally useless. Why bother to have a dim setting?

My microwave is (Norelco) is 27 years old and I only remember replacing the light bulb once.

I have a Montgomery Ward microwave that's about 26 years old, and the bulb finally burned out. Can't find any light bulb to change. Microwave's been built in over the years, so I guess I'll have to use it w/o a bulb. Sure hope, when I'm ready to replace the microwave, that I can find one that will fit the built-in frame.
