Does the java 1.4.2 sdk install the Java Runtime Environment twice?

I just installed this and I noticed that it made C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2 and c:\j2sdk1.4.2\jre\
The contents of both folders look identical to me. Why would they do that?

I think the SDK installs it once. The other folder is from another installation of just the JRE's.

But this is a freshly installed copy of WinXP. All I did was download the sdk and install it; does windows XP come with the 1.4.2 JRE? Or maybe service pack 1 comes with it? I'd like to delete one if possible.

I'm not sure where it came from then. I recently found the same two installs on my computer so I just went into Add/Remove programs and uninstalled the regular JRE's.

Yep. :)

Actually, I think I reinstalled the SDKs because I was using an older one. If you run into any problems with Java, just redownload either the SDK or just the JRE's and reinstall them.

The java SDK installs two copies by default. One is the SDK and the other is just the JRE and is used with IE and/or Mozilla

Is there really any need for IE or Mozilla to have it's own JRE? Way to waste tens of MB on my hdd Sun...
