Does the Intel 430TX chipset support AMD K6-2 or 3

The title says it all. I have a motherboard with a 430TX chipset and I know it supports all the Intel cpus from 75-200mmx, however does anyone know if it supports the AMD K6-2 or K6-3 cpus.

you might get lucky with an evergreen chip that has a voltage adapter for included with chip. I have a tyan tomcat 3 that runs fine with this adapter and chip. 400 Mhz for me.

I think it depends on the board and whether or not you can upgrade the BIOS. I have a Tyan S1573 Titan Turbo and I have seen an article on how to flash to Tyan's latest BIOS to support a K6-2 400 chip (which remaps the multiplier from 2X to 6X to get the 400 clock speed with the 66 MHz front side bus) The newer BIOS also includes support for hard drives in excess of 8.4 gig. Check it out with the manufacturer of your motherboard.

Well it says so "Supports MMX, Cyrix/IBM 5x86, 6x86, AMD-K5 and K6"

You might not be able to run anything above 400 mhz though due to too high currency draw (you might fry the mobo). Update to the latest bios check that you have the righ voltage to the cpu and you should be set.

Depends on what you want. The K6-2 supports a bus clock of 95 or 100 Mhz. The TX chipset is certified for 66 Mhz only. It is overclockable to 88 Mhz. The only problem you are getting is that the memory (72 pins) doesn't run on this speed!!

<< I have some cheap ass board >>

Note to self: Supermicro boards kick a$$ ;) Edit: Ok..Well maybe not this one...but in general

<< and 2 168-pin DIMM sockets support 8 MB to 256 MB >>

Your board should run fine with DIMMs and a K6-2, just keep in mind if you have a 100Mhz FSB K6-2 you won't be able to use it there, unless you push the multiplier to 6x66 = 400 or 4.5x88 = 396, or maybe 5x88 = 440

But you should be able to do it with a BIOS update.

If I update the BIOS will it give me the option of a 6x multiplier. So that i can do 6x66mhz = 400

I have some ghetto ass pc-chips TX board, and it doesnt have the voltage to support my k6-2-300.

Use the 2x multiplier, it will remap to 6x. I don't think a bios update will give you more multiplier options

the evergreen chip was basicly an AMD k6-2 400 or faster, with an voltage regulator and adapter in one. It has its own multiplier adjustment on it and it is preset to 6. So on a 66 Mhz fsb you could run up to 400 Mhz. It does work on a lot/most Motheboards. It is what I am using for my server PC.

kingston also makes on

Kingstonturbo chip 400

A lot will depend on whether or not the board will support the dual voltage requirement of the K6-2 and K6-3 chips.

Yes, I haven't used it myself, but when I checked this out last year, several people claimed that amd has remapped the 2x multiplicator to 6x. So using 2x+66 mzh will give you 400 mhz.

Since your mobo supports the k6 chips, the dual voltage thing shouldn't be an issue.

Alright that's cool! I guess I'll have to sell my 200mmx and get a K6-2 400 :)
What is that about the dual voltage?

you mobo must be able to set the Vcore (2.2V) and the Vio (3.45 V) separately.

If you can find one cheap, get a k6-3 400.

Yeah it support 2.1-3.5v

However how would i set the jumpers for 400mhz amd k6-2.

I only have instructions for the pentium cpus 75-233 and the
K5 - Pr 75-166
K6 - Pr 166-233

The 400mhz k6-2 would compare to which of these options.

Hmm, I don't have the same mobo as you, but this is what I found on the compability page of my mobo "AMD K6 (166 ... 233 MHz)with Vcore=2.9/3.2V, AMD K6 (233 and 266 MHz) with Vcore=2.2V (HOT-569 V2.x and HOT-569A), AMD K6 300 MHz with Vcore=2.2V/Vio=3.45 (HOT-569 V2.x since Lot-Nr. 23, only)"

It seems neither of the settings you mentioned would do. Perhaps somebody else who has your mobo can answer this question?

Hey this Sounds pretty good . . . I have an old system that I would like to upgrade. It sayz that it can run a K6-2 400 MHZ. Could it run a K6-3 with the same voltage as the K6-2?

Yeah, Mine said around the same thing but I went to my motherboard's website and discovered that I just needed to flash the bios to be able to support it . .just wondering if it would take advantage of the cache in the K6-3 or not . .if it doesn't then i'll just stick with a K6-2

that's cool

so you have a regular socket 7 mobo and once you flashed the bios it now supports k6-2
