Does the high-pitched whine from a TV bother you?

For some reason -- maybe because we just raised our TV so it's closer to ear level -- I'm noticing the high-pitched whine from our Panasonic 27" TV a lot more now than I ever have before. I've always noticed it, but not this much. Is there anything you can do about this, or is it just a flaw of CRT TV's?

I just upgraded my speakers, so I can't be in the market for a new TV for a while... 😀

Anyone else notice this a lot with TVs? Is there anything that can be done about it?

Listen to some really loud music, go to a concert, stand beside a jackhammer or something until you can't heard the high frequencies anymore... 🙂
 
Most TV repair places can open the set up and quiet it down for you if its bothering you. My shop will do this for our $20 minimum charge, basically this involves dampening the vibration of the IHVT transformer, or SMPS transformer.

Call up some places in your area and see what they've got to say

Yes, it bothers me, but most people I know can't even hear it. Of course, not all TVs/monitors do it. I'm glad that right now none of my hardware does it. I absolutely hate it.

I used to hear it, between age and years of loud music my hearing has dropped off considerably. No longer hear that high frequency or a lot of other things anymore either 🙁

 
The whine from the TV is at NTSC horizontal scan frequency about 15.7kHz. Thats at the upper limit of human hearing, some can hear it most cant. The CRT anode voltage (30kVDC) is derived from the horizontal circuit, the step up transformer (IHVT) is more than likely causing the whine

A computer monitor runs at much higher horizontal scan frequencies so even if they are making noise, you'll never know.
 
Yeah, I can hear it. The noist doesnt bother me, but if the TV is on for no reason (and I can tell if it's on from upstairs), then I'll go turn it off.

being in the TV service field, im trained to listen for it. It drives me absolutely nuts, luckily my sets at home are all pretty quiet :beer:

Fluorescent lights do it too and it bugs me that no-one else seems to hear it. I think it's actually something in the power supply since I can hear when my laptop's power brick is connected to an outlet even if the laptop isn't plugged into the power brick.

Fluorescent lights are like a low frequency buzz from the 60Hz wall power and dont really bother me. Some lights are noisier than others it seems too. The whine from your laptop brick is probably from a high frequency switching powersupply for the laptop, same kind of thing thats makin noise in TV's.
