Does the GTX295 really get trounced by the HD4870X2...

I would try to find some comparisons with recent drivers.

2X Core 216s not equalling 1 280 does not jive 😉

IIRC it 2x240sp, not 216sp.

That's what I'm sayin'...right? Anyone got any leads on GTX295 XP performance in games?

Thanks,

In the same review it kills all other cards in all the Vista tests.

Interesting... I wouldn't discount these benchmarks offhand. It looks like GTX 295 (and Quad SLI) isn't that great in DX9 when there is also a DX10 path. Might just be that NV prioritizes Vista DX10 driver development for its flagship, which does make sense. I'm not sure how many people who actually bought a GTX 295 still run XP or run DX10 games in DX9.

Agreed, maybe ATI based their strategy on the assumption that most gamers did not/will not migrate to Vista?

I'm just looking for the best card for my setup until DX11 is a reality...sounds like 4870x2 is it for now?

Hrumph!

I have a feeling you werent trying to compare the cards to see which one to buy....

I dont think the Vista/XP or DX9/DX10 differences would be caused by memory. Wouldnt that be the differences at high resolution with AA?

that extra 128mb of usable ram would only make a difference at 2560 and with AA. even at those settings there are only a couple games where going from 896 to 1024 would ever make a difference.

Huh, why, cuz I said maybe? Seriously dude, I'm just looking for some guidance. I really wanted the GTX295 cuz it seemed to consistently outperform the 4870x2, until I started to realize that it was mostly in DX10? If Nvidia is abandoning driver enhancements for DX9 I'm not gettin' the GTX295, based on the results I've seen so far?

Both cards seriously outperform my existing card, I'm just looking for the best one.

Not for me...2 coming into stock at a Fry's near me tomorrow:thumbsup:

However, I still don't have a warm fuzzy about the 295:frown:

DX9c is nowhere as demanding as DX10
- nor does it look as good 😛

i guess if you are running XP at 25x16 it might make a real difference .. but then either sandwich would be fine for DX9c at lower resolutions

in YOUR case, pick the cheaper card

You gonna run those in your P5Q-Deluxe? 🙂

Yeah, why, cuz of the 8x PCI-E thingy?

The only issue with the 295 is that its loud if you push it hard with vsync off or in games where you get less than 60 fps like crysis. You can tweak it to run in the 80's and keep the volume to a reasonable level but its still louder than a 280. Apparently the 4870x2 is in the same boat. Speedwise there is no reason not to feel warm and fuzzy about the card, as it runs fast as hell. If only it came with aftermarket air coolers available to cut down the noise.

Both are $499 at Fry's:frown:Online is about $100 cheaper though, huh?

what i am trying to say is that if you game at 19x12 or below and want to play ANY DX9C game FULLY *maxed out*

either card would be awesome

in that case, i always look for the best deal

Just to point it out, all those reviews you linked to were for release day. I know form personal experience that over the last month, each driver release has given me performance gains in various games (I'm in Vista 64, but still, I wouldn't be surprised if there were improvements in all OS's). Also, I think NVIDIA probably put the bulk of its pre-release driver work into the newest, most demanding DX10 titles. Windows XP is an old OS now and DX9 is also history (relatively speaking, this isn't the point of my argument), therefore I wouldn't be surprised if the drivers weren't completely ironed out in that environment.

No... The P5Q-Deluxe doesn't support SLI.
