just wondering... i thought small amount of it is good for you.
I object to putting fluoride in my water; 1) because I want water, not medication 2) fluoride is a topical treatment, not something to ingest.Originally posted by: Eli

It's different with something like chlorination because that is a necessary evil.. It is required for our water systems to work in most cases.
Fluoride is not. Too much can be a bad thing..
What if you're getting adequate fluoride in your diet? Ontop of toothpaste? Ontop of fluoridated water?
Shrug, just a thought.

...Ever wonder about fluoride? Most of us believe the substance is a harmless dental panacea found in toothpaste and fortified water. To industry, fluoride signifies something else entirely: Used to produce and refine aluminum, zinc, uranium, refrigerants, aerosol propellants, insecticides, fertilizers, waterproof coatings, lubricants, firefighting foams, and pharmaceuticals, this adaptable chemical has made fortunes for DuPont, Alcoa, General Motors, and other manufacturing giants. Fluoride has also been key to our nation's ascent to military dominance. Without fluoride, the mighty industry that built airplanes and munitions during two world wars would have been hobbled. Equally significant, without the innovative fluorine-based compounds concocted in corporate and academic research laboratories, the United States might not have been the first to build the atomic bomb.
But fluoride has another characteristic: It's poisonous to humans. Since the early 1930s, scientists have been aware that too much fluoride can wreak havoc on the human body. Overexposure has been linked to the thickening of bone to the point of spinal fusion, as well as to mouth, throat, and bone cancer; emphysema-like respiratory conditions; skin lesions; liver and kidney damage; neurological disorders; and a host of other ailments. Anyone who's read the warning label on a tube of toothpaste knows you shouldn't have too much of the stuff
--------------------------
mantra: I've been told fluoride is good. I'm a good American. I'm a friggin idiot.

Just in case you didn't know... you should go out of your way to avoid x-rays. Also, if you're undergoing cancer treatment, you should make sure the radiation is directed toward the problem area and not your entire body. Kind of like if you want to prevent cavities, you should expose your teeth to a very small amount of flouride, and not your entire body, or any internal organs.Originally posted by: wfbberzerker

well, too much radiation can kill you. in small doses, it treats cancer and is used in x-rays.
moral? too much of anything can kill you - doesn't mean you should immediately shun it.
and the argument "flouride is used to make military weapons, etc" is simply irrelevant. there are LOTS of chemicals and products that we ingest or use on a daily basis that are used in the making of military/industrial products.

Q: Is fluoride added to the drinking water here on O'ahu?
A: The BWS does not add fluoride to the municipal water supply. However, Federal regulations require that all military installations add both fluoride and chlorine to their water supplies regardless of water quality.

Tap water + brita = good tasting water.
Bottled = waste of money IMO.
Notice that I said most water systems.. There are certainly those that are clean enough otherwise.. But even then, it's somewhat of a gamble unless you get it tested often.Originally posted by: B00ne

Why is Chloride an necessary evil? are your water installation that bad? Here we do not have Chloride in the water (well there might be but it is undetectable by my nose) - yet it is usually cleaner than uncarbonated botteled water. When I was in the US on the other hand the water was disgusting - ech time I opened the tap it smelled like I was transferred to a public Swimming pool.
Our water is flourinated afaik though. I rather have the flourination than the Chlorination but alas who cares to each his own nation![]()
