City governments do. San Antonio was probably the last big city to get flouride in the tap water. There was a vote for it ~4 years ago and it passed. We now have flouranated water.

Tap water = fine.
Tap water + brita = good tasting water.
Bottled = waste of money IMO.

Because the water company knows more about what's good for your teeth than your dentist.

It doesen't matter, the choice is a part of being "free".

It's different with something like chlorination because that is a necessary evil.. It is required for our water systems to work in most cases.

Fluoride is not. Too much can be a bad thing..

What if you're getting adequate fluoride in your diet? Ontop of toothpaste? Ontop of fluoridated water?

Shrug, just a thought.
I object to putting fluoride in my water; 1) because I want water, not medication 2) fluoride is a topical treatment, not something to ingest.

This gov't putting fluoride in the water really irritates me. If there's such a public interest in getting fluoride "out there to the people", then they should bottle-up flouride rinses and hand them out for free. But instead they put it in the water -- leaving us to either eat a toxin or pay $1/gallon for drinking water.

...Ever wonder about fluoride? Most of us believe the substance is a harmless dental panacea found in toothpaste and fortified water. To industry, fluoride signifies something else entirely: Used to produce and refine aluminum, zinc, uranium, refrigerants, aerosol propellants, insecticides, fertilizers, waterproof coatings, lubricants, firefighting foams, and pharmaceuticals, this adaptable chemical has made fortunes for DuPont, Alcoa, General Motors, and other manufacturing giants. Fluoride has also been key to our nation's ascent to military dominance. Without fluoride, the mighty industry that built airplanes and munitions during two world wars would have been hobbled. Equally significant, without the innovative fluorine-based compounds concocted in corporate and academic research laboratories, the United States might not have been the first to build the atomic bomb.

But fluoride has another characteristic: It's poisonous to humans. Since the early 1930s, scientists have been aware that too much fluoride can wreak havoc on the human body. Overexposure has been linked to the thickening of bone to the point of spinal fusion, as well as to mouth, throat, and bone cancer; emphysema-like respiratory conditions; skin lesions; liver and kidney damage; neurological disorders; and a host of other ailments. Anyone who's read the warning label on a tube of toothpaste knows you shouldn't have too much of the stuff

--------------------------

mantra: I've been told fluoride is good. I'm a good American. I'm a friggin idiot.

well, too much radiation can kill you. in small doses, it treats cancer and is used in x-rays.
moral? too much of anything can kill you - doesn't mean you should immediately shun it.

and the argument "flouride is used to make military weapons, etc" is simply irrelevant. there are LOTS of chemicals and products that we ingest or use on a daily basis that are used in the making of military/industrial products.

Because recent research has shown flouride may do more harm than good in the long run.

Just in case you didn't know... you should go out of your way to avoid x-rays. Also, if you're undergoing cancer treatment, you should make sure the radiation is directed toward the problem area and not your entire body. Kind of like if you want to prevent cavities, you should expose your teeth to a very small amount of flouride, and not your entire body, or any internal organs.
For most people -- close to 100% of people who have ever heard of ATOT, or computers in general -- the fluoride forced upon us in the water supply is overkill. Anyone who uses any real toothpaste is exposed to an adequate amount of fluoride.
The fact still remains that MY water and YOUR water is having poison added to it for the sole reason to let some poor kid accross town get fewer cavities. That pisses me off.

Why is Chloride an necessary evil? are your water installation that bad? Here we do not have Chloride in the water (well there might be but it is undetectable by my nose) - yet it is usually cleaner than uncarbonated botteled water. When I was in the US on the other hand the water was disgusting - ech time I opened the tap it smelled like I was transferred to a public Swimming pool.
Our water is flourinated afaik though. I rather have the flourination than the Chlorination but alas who cares to each his own nation ;)

people need to find something better to get pissed about than the conspiracy of the government trying to poison them with fluoride.

A: The BWS does not add fluoride to the municipal water supply. However, Federal regulations require that all military installations add both fluoride and chlorine to their water supplies regardless of water quality.

That is correct

We need fluoride to counteract crustacean pee in municipal water supplies...(looks accusingly at Aquaman) ;)

Notice that I said most water systems.. There are certainly those that are clean enough otherwise.. But even then, it's somewhat of a gamble unless you get it tested often.

Chlorine is necessary because....... a little bit of chlorine is better than spreading disease. :)

Mmm... ;)

Chlorine is no big deal. Just let your water sit for 24 hours before drinking it, loosely capped. In the fridge is fine.

The only way to remove fluoride from the water is with reverse osmosis, an activated alumina defluoridation filter,.. and probably a few other realitivly expensive ways.

Did prof lie about fluoride-cancer link?

July 15, 2005

BOSTON -- Harvard University said it is investigating whether a dentistry professor who edits a newsletter funded by a toothpaste maker played down research showing an increased cancer risk from drinking fluoridated tap water.

The school will work with the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences to review Chester Douglass' research into fluoride and osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, Harvard Medical School spokesman John Lacey said.

The institute gave a $1.3 million study grant in 1992 to Douglass, editor of the Colgate Oral Health Report, who found the odds of having osteosarcoma after drinking fluoridated water were ''not statistically different'' from the odds for those who drank non-fluoridated water.

But a doctoral student who studied some of the same people reported in her 2001 thesis that boys who drink fluoridated water appear to have an increased risk of developing the bone cancer. AP

I'm not worried about fluoride or chlorine...
It's the amount of DHMO in our water supply that scares me.
