I could not even begin to understand why people would think she has the best female voice. To me it sounds too strained and forced; somewhat unnatural.

The best female vocalist I can think of is Sarah Brightman, but then again she is just so far above and beyond most vocalists Sarah Brightman is in a whole different realm.

Sarah Brightman is a soprano. We're talking about regualr music here, not opera. Sarah Brightman does have an awesome voice, but it's really high pitched.

LOL, "regular music". Most people here think "opera" is a browser; let's get some more exposure for "classical" music. :) For the record, I never heard of Sarah Brightman, but then I'm not a huge opera fan (chamber music for me).

Hahaha, yeah really that is funny 'regular music' - come on WTF is that supposed to mean? Anyhow, she really is not an opera singer per se but rather has done songs from operas; if that makes any sense. She has done chamber music (a few requiems), but musicals was her big thing. Anyhow she has released a few 'pop' albums; kind of a cross between Enya, Bjork, opera, and trance.
Come on she has done a cover of Dust in the Wind, that can be considered 'regular' music!

this thread is a joke, right?

tori amos! BJORK! both these women have more technical ability, more power, more dynamics, more emotion, and vastly greater sincerity.

i've seen bjork perform live and she's got one of the most powerful voices i've ever heard, and unlike opera singers, she doesn't make me seasick with idiotic vibrato. there's a video of her performing her last album live in her apartment for her record company executives, and she's playing in front of a massive PA, strings, harp, etc. In the video, she only uses the mic to enhance her really soft singing. For the real singing, the mic falls to her side and she simply belts it out over the rest of the band with no vocal amplification.

I'm a rock singer and have done studio production and live sound, and I can tell you that the singer from Evanescence is not a strong singer. They have her voice compressed and processed up the ying-yang to try to get her to cut above the band, and that's despite her singing in a much higher register than the band plays, which helps her cut through. she must be a live sound engineer's worst nightmare. all breath and no power.

100 cookies says the people who get chills from her singing wouldn't give two craps if she was fat and ugly or played a style of music that wasn't trendy.

Good lord no! I can't stand to listen to her nasal annoying voice for more than a few seconds! Yuck!

Now, for a real female singer, how about Enya for the mellow stuff, Diana Ross for normal stuff, or Angela Gossow for extreme stuff.

?!? so you mean pop?

Most base their perception on best vocals as which woman tweaks them up the most. Fact is there are many talented artists that we don't hear because society deems them repulsive. Milli Vannilli was a good example....(not saying they were great vocalists, just popular).

imo, christina aguilera's voice blows away the evanesence woman's voice.

i'm not a big fan of christina but from what i've heard she has much more range, much more dynamism, and much better timbre.

EDIT: and i do like evanesence.

I like Tracy Thorn from Everything But the Girl... She's done some good stuff with Massive Attack too.

If you like more of a heavier/rock type sound, definately check out The Gathering. Anneke has an awesome voice.

When I said REGULAR MUSIC I meant MAINSTREAM. What is played on the popular stations. I thought I already defined that, sheesh.

Mariah may have a broader range, but her voice makes me want to puncture my eardrums with an icepick.

Not the best, but I think it meshes very well with their music. I hope it's just as good in their next album cause guitarist Ben Moody has since left the band.

I at least, was merely poking fun. :D

Bjork, eh? That time she "sang" while wearing that idiotic swan outfit at some awards show was terrible!

I don't think she's that amazing, she just has a strangely soothing, spooky voice.

About 10 years ago I would have said Mariah Carey was the best female singer, but she seems to have lost her voice (along with her clothes...). Christina Aguilera does have an amazing voice, too bad I cannot stand her music and that fake "ghetto" attitude.

I think Kelly Clarkson may become the next great female pop singer. I watched her final American Idol performance, and she has an amazing range and a VERY powerful voice.

Beyonce, Charlotte Church, Renee Fleming, and hundreds of other women vocalist all have far superior voices.

I know at least three girls who have karokee'd her voice perfectly...it is way easy for a talented and trained professional voice.

Fsck, my wife sings better than she does...but my wife is a professional vocalist, sings in professional classical and chamber groups, etc.
