Why is it that when you turn on FSAA and AF in GTA3 it kills the games performence it seems on any video card. It can be a ATI 9700 pro, GF4 ti 4200, GF4 ti 4600, etc. ? Also why do some games like JDK 2 not lose as many fps when FSAA and AF is turned on to maximum as other games like unreal 2003, serious sam 2, etc? i know its the games and not the video card but whats the reason please. Bad code?

Thanks

murphy55d so why does it still have a huge performence drop when FSAA or AF is enabled on any video card?

GTA3 is VERY cpu intensive... turning on FSAA just adds onto the things the cpu has to worry about... Also it's tough because there are sooo many moving things in gta3 that even without fsaa it brings top of the line systems to their knees.

Syborg1211 so what kind of computer and video card you need to beable to play any game with maximum FSAA and AF with all details on maximum. Plus at 1600x1200 ?

i play GTA3 with a P4 2.66B@3.00 and a R9700pro with full on 6XAA at 1600x1200 and was a huge step up from a g4Ti4600 which could not cope with AA at all. There were occasional slowdowns (like when traversing a rival gangs territory and them popping off rounds at you) but smooth framerate overall compared to the 4600. I didnt notice a big dropoff in framerate when enabling AA. the only buggy issue i encountered was save games casuing system hangs later in the game but got over that by using a new save slot each time i finished a mission.

caboob thanks. I guess the game isn't coded very well. To bad games can't be made to run as fast as possible and to be not very buggy.

Do you all think a 4 or 5ghz processor would make GTA3 a lot more playable at high resolutions like 1600x1200 and with FSAA and AF on like 4x and 8x or even 6x and 16x? Plus with all details on high.

I can't wait when the ATI 9700 pro gets a 20,000 3dmark2001SE score! I bet it will with like a 5 ghz processor, really fast ram, etc. That would mean if you get 20,000 with no FSAA or AF that you would maybe get a lot higher score with FSAA and AF on maximum! So it would have more safety net room!

Do you know how much stuff goes on in GTA3? How many people, cars, etc it has to control at one time? I've played GTA3 and Vice City on PS2 and it ran perfectly fine, and with the 'limited' power of the PS2 I'm impressed. Running a high resolution wasn't a high priority for them, and with the PS2 as their primary target how can you blame them?

The bugs are a little annoying, but I've seen very few so I don't think they did too bad of a job.

of course, the game is native to the PS2. i am actually impressed by the stability of the game given the timeframe in which they ported the game over and after the first patch. in fact, the game actually runs its best at the default res (640x480) withh AA turned all the way up. no slow downs at all. i estimate frame rate to be around 60 fps at these settings. i am miffed that a multiplayer component was nixed. i was looking forward to some multiplayer wilding. i speculate that it would not have worked out given that the best multiplayer games are built from the ground up with that in mind and this game's focus has always been on the single-player experience.

hmmm...i get about 60-80 fps w/ a few stutters/dips at some places on a R9500 pro and 4xAA 16xAF on an 1700+
