Does the DiamondMax Plus D740X 40GB have loud seeks?

Does the DiamondMax Plus D740X 40GB have loud seeks?

My IBM Deathstar failed me, and I replaced it with a 40GB 7200RPM maxtor.

From reading the label it appears to be a D740X.

Anyways, the seeks seem to be very loud...it's particuarly noticeable during bootup, but if I search through Windows Explorer I can hear it to.

Now...I don't really care if it's loud...but I'm just paranoid that the drive might be faulty...my other hard drive (and zip drive, and CDRW) failed me recently....

Does anyone else have one of these drives, and find that the seeks are noticeably audible?

Yep, they are fairly loud. I have one of the fluid bearing models and it's fairly nosiy too. I've found the WD drives to be much quieter, with the Seagate Cuda IV's being the quietest of them all. 🙂

Yeah I was so close to the WD, the 100GB goes on sale in a couple of days...it would only have cost me about $200...and the 40GB cost me $150...(canadian)

I was just a day to early hehe

My IBM blew up and I needed a new drive, so I went into my favourite local shop, and they use the Maxtors in most of the systems they build, they only use other brands if it's specifically requested, and they don't have to many problems with them, so that seemed good enough to me.

The fan on my heatsink is plenty loud, the seek won't bother me. I'm just paranoid 😉 Thanks for helping to put my paranoia back to sleep hehehe 😉

I have a pair of D740X "L" (fluid BB) and the seeks are relatively noisy during seeks. The WD800JB's I had were far noiser @ idle and seek.

Noriaki,

Seems like I read about a Maxtor setting for my D740X 40G. (non-liquid bearing) ...... or utility program (Maxtor) ...... that quiets the drive .......... ?
But I never looked into it any closer ....... as my fans are so loud, I don't notice the drive sound ....... or at least I don't consider it an unpleasant noise!

Really? I find the exact opposite John. The 80GB WD "SE" drive I have is near silent while my 80GB Fluid Bearing Maxtor is much louder...weird..

🙂

There have been several threads complaining about the Maxtor drives, but I have a two-year-old 13Gig Diamond Max plus 6800 (7200rpm) and it is very quiet. Spin up is barely audible and seeking is even quieter. Why are the new ones so much louder?

Its kinda funny, I expected the WD 80gig I just bought to be a little noisey from threads I have read and I simply can't hear it over my fans. It was a pleasant surprise.

That so many things in your system are failing one after the other indicates a serious problem and most likely not with the individual components. This sounds like a bad power supply to me causing other components to fail.

There's a utility from Maxtor you can manage the operating sound level of ur HDD. It's called AMSET. I never used it so I don't if it really works. You may try it though.

Noriaki I have done the exact same thing as you Deskstar to the same make/model/size Maxtor and it is noticeably louder.. don't fret. It's not the drive dying (gulp- i hope) just louder than the IBM

my CDRW is old and well used. I don't think it was in very good shape from day 1 to be honest. And it's been gradually failing over the last year. It just finally died completely a week ago.

The hard drive is an IBM 75GXP, enough said.

And zip disks are about as reliable as floppy disks. In all honesty, my zip drive is probably fine, but I only have a single zip disk to test it with. But since that single zip disk is the only one that I ever care to use, and it's the only one with data on it I want, the end result from my frame of reference is the same.

I appreciate the help, and at first I thought there was some central cause, but after a more careful analysis, and a great deal of testing with other boards, PSUs, etc. I don't believe that it is the case.

I think my CDRW finally faded, and my hard drive is a Deathstar, it was only a matter of time.

However, despite my reasoning, I'm still a little Paranoid.

I have a Maxtor Diamond Max 30GB 7200rpm. I recently bought 2 IBM120Gxp's and they are almost silent. The maxtor is a little lound, but not bad. I can hear the maxtor when I boot, and when it's under heavy loads. It still runs fine, has been for over a year now, so I wouldn't worry about a lil noise from the ol Maxtor. My buddy has a 40GB 7200rpm, and it sounds just like my 30. Maxtors are a little noisy, but that just how they were made.

6L040J2 => urs is not FBB motor. J means its not the Fluid Bearing motor, it should be a L instead of J.
You can go to the Maxtor site and check it. 40 I think it means the capacity, J type of bearing motor, and 2 the number of plates in the HDD. In ur case 2 is 20 giger plates.
