Does the Dell 2405FPW support dual DVI?

From this threadthis thread it seems like it does, but the cable it comes with is single. If I buy a dual DVI cable, will it support that feature? I'm getting graphics tearing in games, so hopefully that can solve the problem. I have a 7950gx2.

2405FPW is 1920x1200, which is the maximum resolution for single-link DVI. A cable with more bandwidth won't make your GPU pump out 1920x1200 pixels at 32 bits at 60 Hz any faster.

The DVI spec is 1600x1200 max. The timings have to be sped up, or the refresh rate reduced, or something, in order to force 1920x1200 which is out of spec.

I suspect this may be causing some tearing problems. The top 1-2" of my screen seems to tear the most, and a few times it's gone completely bonkers, like what happens when a videocard dies.

Regardless, all manufacturers support 1920x1200 as the max for single link DVI.


There are driver options you can toggle which may ease the symptoms you see. What kind of video card do you have.

Nvidia 7950GX2. Vsync seems to help but only somewhat.

Dang, not familiar with nVidia's driver options. Does it have something like "reduced blanking interval" or "alternate DVI frequency"?

I don't think so. I'll check when I get home. Wouldn't it just not work at 1920x1200 if the settings arent' right?

It's already out of spec If those options don't help any, I'd be curious to see if a different card (a Radeon if you have one) does the same thing.

Does the 2405 seriously come with a single link cable? the 2407 comes with dual link. Kinda odd I think.

I have 2405 and 9800pro 256. Never had any problems with tearing at 1920x1200 with default other settings. I only play CS:S though...

The 2405 does come with Single link DVI

I don't understand what good a dual link cable would do, for any 1920x1200 LCD.

I'm using a single link cable on a Gateway 24". so I dont know what the fuss is about.

I know in CCC, I have an option to "reduce DVI frequency". Look for an option along those lines.

Already suggested Also, I'm using a single link cable on my 2405, but then again I don't play games at all.

I'd like to point out I said the 2407 COMES with a dual link cable. I have no idea if both links are being used.

I highly doubt it, as dual link isn't required unless you're above 1920x1200. Furthermore, I could use said cable on my Radeon 9600, but it wouldn't make a dual-link chip appear on that card.

Because the signal is a single-link signal generated at the source and remains that way regardless of what media it is transmitted over.

Said spec is irrelevant. Single link DVI has been compliant with 1920x1200 for a long time now, everywhere you look And a dumb cable wouldn't change what a card transmits.
