Does the Catholic Church still do the excommunication thing?

everyones getting divorced and using birth control. they'd lose 99% of their people if they were to bother enforcin stuff.

It'd be awfully difficult to enforce well. I don't think every "Catholic" is going to submit to a background investigation to receive communion.
 
I go to a Catholic School. The Church does excommunicate. However , most of it is de facto, which means that certain acts automatically excommunicate you.
 
They do, just for extreme circumstances. Like if you were to take a p!ss on the Pope-mobile while the Pope was in it, yea. Gone.

In the Catholic Church not all sins incur the penalty of excommunication, which is why you don't see every Catholic that uses birth control, for example, being excommunicated. Excommunication is reserved for some particularly grievous sins.

Desecration of the Eucharist
Destroying it, selling it, etc.

A confessor violating the secrecy of confession

Physical violence against the Pope

Consecration of a bishop without a papal mandate
(this applies to both parties)

A confessor granting absolution to his accomplice in sin against the sixth commandment
(i.e. hearing the confession of a partner in sins against celibacy)

Heresy, apostasy, or schism
If I were to become a practicing Muslim or Hindu, for example, I could expect the Church to consider me excommunicated. Or you may recall the rogue bishop ordaining women priests from a few years ago.

Procuring an abortion
This one gets a lot of debate about what constitutes formal material cooperation in procuring an abortion among politicians, voters, etc.

Even so, excommunication would not apply to those 16 or under, those without the use of reason, those ignorant that they have violated a church law or precept, those coerced by force or fear, acting in self-defense, etc.

Excommunications can be lifted through confession, though in some cases the request must reach as high as the Holy See.
