Does the AppleTV, uh, bitstream?

i just want my audio digital in to my AVR, and we'll let that do the DAC.

I'd rather have that than the aTV decoding/converting my audio and passing it through to my AVR only to be amplified.

Is that possible? Thanks!

It will send a Dolby Digital 5.1 passthru to the AVR/DAC. I'm not sure if there was a setting for raw LPCM bitstreaming via HDMI, but your AVR will use it's own DAC regardless.

Thanks for the reply. What about stereo audio (i.e. music, not movies)? Does that go over HDMI? Optical only?

And what format is that? I would just like to be sure all DAC is done in the AVR, not the aTV.

As long as you have the ATV connected to your AVR via HDMI or optical SPDIF, it's a digital signal, and thus your AVR's DAC will do the decoding. Here's more info:
