I want to listen to just the musical parts of some of my mp3s in an effort to play along (w/my guitar)... ideally the software would be free.
I don't know if this is even possible to isolate.

Thanks in advance.

Mods: if this should be in a different forum, feel free to move it~

It is possible in theory, but as far as I know, no such software exists to completely remove vocals without apparent side effect to the music. The basic idea behind the simpler software is to remove the center-mix, which obviously only works when the vocals are centered, and even then it's incompletely because of stereo 'fraying'.

The .kar files are good for this purpose. They are midi-based files intended for kareoke. I think http://www.karaokebash.com/ is a good site.

Consider using Band in a box. Wonderful program, IMO. I only know the Danish sites for it, but do a Google search for it.

And there is another wonderful program which tries to do exactly what you request. It also helps in deciding which chords and notes are played. I cannot remember the name. Arrgh. Tip of my tongue (well, fingertips, really).

I believe Winamp had that feature although it's been a long time since I used it. We used to use it to remove lyrics from sounds to record a sound track for church specials. Not sure if you can still do it.

I agree. It's possible but the programs I have tried several years ago basically remove a certain frequency range of audio... generally the mids - which is where most vocals fall under. Unfortunately this also affects any music that may fall into this frequency range. It didn't sound very good. Your best bet is to find an instrumental version of the song, or a karaoke version if possible.

Part of the massive dump that is Creative's drivers/software is the EAX console component. It includes a karaoke toggle button that lets you dampen voices, not sure how well it works because I think it only applies to their crappy music player that I never installed. If you have an audigy or newer it should be included.
