The wife and I have been tossing around the idea of getting a dog now that we own our own home but neither of us have found munch information in regards to if there are any specific breeds that are good around cats (we have two indoor only and it's their home first) and also shed very little.

Does anyone know of any breed that'd fit what we're looking for?

Just look at low/non shedding varieties of dogs. Usually there isn't a problem with dogs and cats, especially when they've been socialized around each other at a young age.

Some breeds just have too much instinct in them to overcome any nurturing. A wheaten terrier is an example. It's generally regarded as one of the "least shedding" dogs you can get, but is horrible around cats. They are just high strung animals that react to fast moving little furry creatures. That's what they were bred to do. No upbringing can easily trump that.

Well maybe this is a stupid question, but are there any non poodle looking non-shedding dogs out there that aren't hairless?

It doesn't have to be zero shedding but something that's not over the top like I've seen some dogs.

Avoid anything in the terrier family...it's in their nature to fuck with cats...we've had a Jack Russell that tormented our cats, even though he was raised with them from 6 weeks, we currently have a chihuahua/yorkie mix that thinks the cats are his personal play toys...even though both of the cats are MUCH bigger than he is...
Terriers tend to be terrierists:)
Our other dog is 1/2 long-hair chihuahua and 1/2 pomeranian, and he doesn't bother the cats at all...in fact, they often sleep together.

Sounds like an interesting breed.

I think we're prefer something that was a medium size though.

You could go with a *breed*-doodle. They are mixing all kinds of dogs with Poodles these days for the lack of shedding. You can even get a Golden-Doodle and a mini golden-doodle (mixed with Toy Poodle). A mini golden-doodle would be my dream dog. Our Golden is 13 years old and he has been as good a dog as you could ever want. Shedding is the only drawback.

I was really interested in them at first but have read that they're not good with cats.

Does anyone have any personal experience with them?

EDIT:

I was kind of interested in a Labradoodle though it's hard to get past that poodle hair IMO.

We have a cockapoo, although he's bigger than the pics on the internet (so I doubt he's a true cocakapoo).

I'm allergic to most dogs, and I'm fine living with this on. The only problem we had with him and cats is that he would hump our cats from time to time, which was weird. Got him fixed and now he's fine. :D

You will want to look for breeds with what is called a single coat. Basenji's are one of those breeds (thank you my dear for mentioning them). Unfortunately for them, basenji's are pure evil through and through. You have to raise them around the cats. Our basenji is fine with the 2 kitties she just likes to play with them, and they tell her F**k-Off and she goes to find something else to do.

We have a black lab and he sheds more than long haired dogs we have had. I sometimes wonder if any of his coat is actually physically attached or is there just some weak magical force that keeps some of it against his skin while the rest just floats around our house.

I had a black lab when I was little. When she was about 8 years old, my sister got a kitten. The lab treated the kitten as if it were her own puppy.

That said, she used to shed quite a bit ...

Every dog has a different personality, but golden retrievers are great dogs, they shed though.

Yeah, they're cute. Most are big dogs and still shed at least a little though. And they're expensive!

We have a black lab mix (she's a mutt but mostly lab) and she gets along well with our cat. Most breeds are pretty good with cats so long as you raise them around cats from when they are young.

How old is your cat? We had a cat who was our only pet for many years and when we introduced our dog she didn't like it. She never really warmed up to the dog, tolerated would be a more accurate description. Our current cat is fairly indifferent towards the dog but sometimes they'll play together.

The dog is older now and very mellow. She was a fricken nightmare when she was a puppy though.

As for hair, as long as we keep her brushed and clean shedding isn't too much of a problem.

Terriers are anti just about any thing, even other terriers. They can be trained though.

Most dogs aren't inherently against cats.

A good dog many have gotten here because of no shedding and good with kids and cats is the labradoodle. Not a AKC breed yet, but they are working to standardizing the breed.
