Does SPDIF passthrough work in WinXP?

If I use a Software DVD Player (WinDVD2000 2.3M) in WinXP can I passthrough the AC-3 stream?

Supposedly Win2k SP2 can do this...but I've heard conflicting reports about whether or not it actually does.

But does XP?

Win XP.. no idea.. but there's a beta fix for the SPDIF passthrough for SBLive in Win2k.

You can grab it here.

You can't record anything or allow anything to be recorded in Win XP unless you have a license to do so. A license is a crypto key hidden somewhere on the hard disk that is supposedly inaccessible to the user.

All the more reason not to upgrade to this CRIPPLED OS.

Win2k sp2 cannot passthrough AC3 streams with windvd. It can only do it with powerdvd. I have both and the option is only available with powerdvd. I currently have a sb Live! 5.1 and it may be different for other sound cards. I would imagine windows XP to be the same situation, at least for soundblaster users. I have not seen a driver update that enables you to use spdif out with windvd.

As far as I know, PowerDVD is the only program that can pass through AC-3 audio. Unfortunately, I don't have an AC-3 capable sound card, so I don't know for sure. I'm emailing one of my friends to see if he has gotten it to work, and as soon as I get a reply, I'll let you know.
