Does SouthCentral Bell force you to buy home phone service in order to get DSL?

yep. I had to bite the bullet to get Earthlink. I started with Bellsouth and went to cable after a while to avoid paying for a home phone. I am currently back on DSL but with Earthlink as a provider.

nope... some provider's will allow you to have "naked DSL" which is the DSL service sans phone service.

if you're talking about SBC, I work for SBC and we don't offer naked lines yet, but will in the very near future.

Why would you replace cable modem for DSL thats almost certainly a lot slower. I say suck it up, keep comcast until something better (faster) comes along

But you have to pay for a land line too. Thats fine if you have a home phone already, or need one. But I'm assuming the OP doesn't have one and doesn't need one or he wouldn't be asking.

I know I don't have one and I don't need one, I use my Cell phone as does EVERYONE else I know. Needing a land line is a thing of the past.

So instead its:

cable: 40 bucks a month -- for 4 Mbps
dsl: 15 bucks a month + 25 = 35 -- for 512 Kbps maybe 1 Mbps (depending on area)
dsl plus: 25 bucks a month + 25 = 50 -- for 1 Mbps maybe 2 Mbps (depending on area)

Naked DSL does not require local phone service.

And many places (here for example) my DSL is 3M down and 768K up for $29.95 a month. (and yes I get all of it) Unfortunately they won't allow naked DSL here. Still with the cheapest local package I can get (since I don't use it anyway thanks to $800 in credit at Vonage) it's only slightly more than that (rude word removed) Cox Cable and their 4M service. I'd rather give my money to Verizon even if they are a little slow keeping up with the time than Cox (rude word removed) Cable.
