i can tell the big difference between my x-fi and the onboard audio quality.
however, for many the difference isn't worth the hassle.

Most people don't have speakers that make it worth it anyway. Even some of the best PC speakers are hardly worth having a soundcard, since PC speakers in general are just bad.

All soundcards suffer these issues in combination with certain motherboards unfortunately.
