However, if he is into high end audio playback, on nice setup, a good soundcard is nice for music. For most people not a huge deal, but a high end soundcard you can notice the difference if the music is pure.

this is true.
i can tell the big difference between my x-fi and the onboard audio quality.
however, for many the difference isn't worth the hassle.

Most people don't have speakers that make it worth it anyway. Even some of the best PC speakers are hardly worth having a soundcard, since PC speakers in general are just bad.
