Does smoking turn people into white trash, or does white trash turn to smoking?

Often when I'm driving I see the rusted out piece of crap cars with blue doors and duct-taped plastic-covered window holes, missing hubcaps, NRA stickers, etc...

They invariably have a smoke dangling out of their dirty mouths and probably a nice collection in the ashtray as well.

Now, do broke, untidy people like this take up smoking as part of some funny destiny....

==== OR ====

....does a person turn into a broke, untidy type after they start smoking?????

*MODS: Please don't lock, I know you don't like me (who doesn't feel a bit threatened by the mighty Bill Gates?), but this is not a personal attack on anyone and is not inappropriate, just a discussion on a funny phenomenon.

or maybe you just only notice these people who smoke and ignore beautiful black, indian, or asain people that smoke? People who generally have problems in their life take up smoking to releave stress.

I always argue on the side of nature (and not nurture). People are born with tendencies, a package deal. We have political parties because most people that like gun control also are pro-choice and in favor of government services. Other people happen to enjoy firearms, and almost like clockwork they also are pro-life and against government programs (i.e. just an example, not 100% of course).

My point is that trash tend to smoke. They also tend to own dogs they can't afford, file bankruptcy, not clean up after themselves, and so forth.

Interesting, I never thought of all of the rich sorority chicks, or college students in general.... Though I think they're at the "High School 2" phase where they think they'll be cooler or gain acceptance.

I guess the reason I posted this is because I thought it was funny that you see a crappy car in the lane along side you and once you get up next to them, sure enough, another smoker...

I just wonder if they are so ticked off that their life sucks that smoking helps them chill out (or portray the image I think they are?) or if they drive crappy cars and have disheveled appearances because they waste all of their paychecks on smoking....

This isn't an idea - it's an observation, and a question very similar to the chicken/egg argument.

Nothing wrong with a little debating or thinking about something you never really thought about.

I too have observed this but in a different setting.

if you are ever in a 7-11 or any other convience store, sit back and just observe. I guarantee you will see people who you know who can not afford it go in and buy two things.

Soda/pop
smokes

I often wondered the same thing that Bill just asked.

So what you're saying that you get out so little that it shocks you everytime you see evidence that everyone in the world isn't exactly like you? What are you complaining about...the way other people look?

Best be careful here,I smoke (though I've quit dozens of times and am geting ready to quit again) I'm a considerate smoker who doesn't litter the landscape and I don't consider myself "white trash" of any sort.

I know plenty of people who aren't white trash but smoke, but I don't know a single person who chews tobacco (eeeewww) and isn't.

You've got it all wrong - their ashtray is as clean as yours, because they just flick them out the window when they're done...

I'd be curious as to what one has to do to get you pretentious assholes to label them "white trash"?

Um, I haven't really observed this. Everyone I know who smokes just smells gross. They aren't better or worse people.

I must be an alien then, huh? ;)

I used to smoke, but quit over two years ago. I don't think I've ever been "trash." I've never owned dogs, have paid all my debts, and I'm analy neat. :p

I'm pro Second Amendment, and pro choice, yet anti-socialist.

I think the connection between pro-Second Amendment and anti-socialism is a sense of individual responsibility vs fear based reliance on authority. But I fail to see how pro-choice falls into this. I've met a nearly equal number of folks who are anti-socialism/pro-2nd who are pro-choice, and anti-abortion.

Hell, even the libertarian party is split on the abortion issue.

Hate to break it to you but there's plenty of white trash out there driving nice cars and not smoking. The real question is, why do morons like you feel the need to express their condescending opinions? But I guess the answer to that is self-evident.

I grew up in a family of non-smokers, who come from generations of non-smokers. I fell in love with a young woman who happened to smoke. I didn't care for the habit but I was crazy about everything else about her. Once I met her immediate and extended family I knew she had very little chance of being a non-smoker, growing up in that environment. Her family is like a caricature from a book. They live in Louisiana, every single one of them live in a trailer, all the women smoked or smoke while they're pregnant, none of her siblings or parents finished high school, none of siblings or parents have a vehicle. Just about all of her extended family carry disposable phones and pays by the day or minute. Most times her mom and brother don't have minutes at all. About half the family gets food stamps or WIC. They have few teeth, and even fewer possibilities, but they ALWAYS have money for cigarettes.

We live far away from our families. And my wife has quit smoking. Along her path to her degree she discovered that educated people don't smoke and she was tired of being the odd man out. Simple peer observation and pressure. But getting back into her familial environment is trigger laden, walking into a smoke filled house. Her family is white trash, pure and simple. Everyone I have met from her youth is white trash, and the only interruption any of them have taken from smoking is when they're in jail.

I'm lucky she's emancipated herself from her family, and the nasty habits and lifestyles they remain ensconced in. With luck, our children will escape the legacy of Loserdom and smoking.

Does being a new member turn people into thread necromancers, or do necromancers create new usernames just to necro threads? :p
