Does Skype for iPhone work well enough on crappy hotel WIFI?

We're heading to the UK & Ireland in May and it seems to me the cheapest and most inexpensive way to keep in touch with home would be to use Skype on random free WIFI hotspots. I'm thinking hotel, coffee shops and the like.

Would Skype work well enough (in general) on these kind of connections? Or should we just buy a stupid calling card?

For just voice, probably so...then again the last hotel I stayed at had a wifi signal 3x slower than my 3G (.5 Mbps vs 1.5 Mbps). It will all depend on the wifi speed and stability.
