My gf want a diamond ring for Christmas and I need help on rock selection.

1. Small diamond with high clarity & cut.
2. Middle of the road size clarity & cut.
3. Large rock but middle to lower clarity & cut.

I agree with minendo. This is something that you need to discuss with your g/f beforehand (it may be too late now).

In addition, you may wish to stop and take this moment to give yourself a quick reality check. Your g/f has let you know that she wants a diamond ring for xmas; a ring with a stone large enough for you to worry about the size/clarity issue. Remember, this is apparently not an engagement ring, but a "mere" xmas present. I hope you are either rich or very, very much in love with a woman with whom you've been happily together for a long time; otherwise, you may have a materialistic golddigger on your hands.

What's your budget here? The one thing you don't want to skimp on is cut. The other three Cs come after that. A good cut can compensate for lower clarity and color as it will return more light. I think that you'd be ok with going as low as I color, VS2-SI2 (provided it's an eye-clean SI2), and as big as you want/can afford. I recommend checking out the Diamondtalk forums.

Thanks WhiteKnight, I was looking at H&A ideal cut, E/F, VVS1/VVS2, and the price was insane.

How much does she know about diamonds? Does she own a loupe?

If he is not educated, and there are not noticable inclusions (carbon or feathers) then I would go mid grade mid size. A good jeweler can take a mid grade diamond and cut it so it is gorgeous. And do your homework. DONT buy from a mall jeweler. (Kay's, Zales, etc) Their stuff is crap and overpriced. Find one jeweler and tell him that you are not just looking for a diamond ring.. you are looking for a JEWELER! one you can trust for mother's days, anniversary's. etc...for years to come. He will be very helpful and give you a good deal. Also, read up on diamonds and ask LOADS and loads of questions. If the jewel looks confused LEAVE immeditately. You dont want to give $$$ to anyone who doesnt know more than you do about what you are buying. the jewelry stores have lights to make the diamonds look better. Ask for a microscope or to take it outside. Don't only go by the four C's! they are vital to buying a diamond but the dimensions are just as important. That will determine how the light is refracted thru the stone and even a very high quality stone will look 'flat' is the dimensions are not correct. If you can afford it, get your center stone first, then have it put it the setting. You will know a lot better what oyu are getting and normally the lesser quality diamonds are pre-set.

One more thing....
Make sure the diamond *IS* certified. If not, the grading is only what any jeweler says it is. EGL and GIA are the ONLY ones that are worth anything. The rest you can line the bird cage with.

Thanks Karen & Amorphus, I own a loupe too, but I use it to look at films. I'm going for a SI1 or SI2 with H&A ideal cut after reading the URL provided by Amorphus.
