Does shredded styrofoam in a car's gas tank really screw it up?

The best method is a plastic baggie.

It'll get sucked into the filter, choke the engine and stall it, but when the pump stops, the bag is released from the filter and the car works again. They'll never figure it out. :p

*note: I would NEVER do this because I don't have anyone I hate that much

i heard of this but with a ping pong ball

it floats until it gets sucked up then clogs the line stalls engine and when egine stops floats ight back up until it gets sucked into the line again

Makes sense, but most cars nowadays don't have holes big enough to stick anything more than a pump nozzle in.

I really wouldn't go around dumping anything into anyone's gas tank. Especially not sugar or styrofoam etc. Getting that gunk out would be hundreds, if not thousands of dollars to repair and you'd likely be also screwing over the 2nd/3rd owners of the car down the road.

I agree with the others, if for some reason you're determined to do it, 2 cycle engine oil is your best bet. Car will smoke like crazy, but little permanent harm will be done. You might actually screw up the catalytic converter or o2 sensors, but I think otherwise things would be okay after two more clean tanks. But the perception will be that something very bad has happened to their car.

Shoving potatoes (Raw) up into the tail pipe is a slightly less destructive way to immobilize the car. Syrofoam will clog the fuel injectors and foul the sparkplugs, as will oil. If you truly need to destroy the engine, fine pumice added to the engine's oil will do it, so will sand, and maybe baking soda. You could also drain the oil from the crankcase and refill it with some other liquid.

Potatoes have the advantage of not needing access to the inside of the car or the ability to open the gas tank. They must be bigger than the diameter of the tail pipe to seal it off. I suppose that the spray sealant that expands into a hard foam would do an excellent job as well.

You could also attach a chain from soething secure to a rear axle so that when the car is driven away...

Or a banana. ;)

Put 1 cup gas in the muffler, plug tailpipe. Run like hell.

Gas is combustible. It likes to expand. Steel mufflers don't.

Valve grinding compound in the crankcase does wonders. A compression check in just one week reveals wear equivalent of driving 100k miles! :Q Polyester (fiberglass matt resin) will kill an engine too.

You can also crimp some split shot (fishing weights) on the throttle cable for jack rabbit starts. Very effective on a manual tranny.

Perhaps the most devastating thing is to wedge a cigar lighter refill (butane canister) can between the catalytic converter and heat shield. NOTE: If you're dumb enough to do this and get caught, you're likely to spend the rest of your life in prison!

I've done the valve grinding compound thing before.. to a small 2HP engine I didn't care about anymore.

I ran it for about 3 hours. After 3 hours, the flywheel mains were so sloppy it was rubbing against the magneto. I stopped it to mess around and couldn't get it started again.

Upon dissassembly, the carnage was awesome.. you could catch your fingernail on the cylinder ridge. :Q

And yes, adding styrofoam to a cars tank will seriously screw it up. Any ammount would be bad, as it would dissolve in the gasoline and then get deposited into the engine as the fuel was burned away.

The sugar thing is kinda a myth, since sugar will not dissolve in gasoline. It'll just clog the fuel filter.
