Does Sam's Club / Costco gas count for the 5% cashback with Citicard?

So my friends and I all have the Citicard Plat Dividends card that gives 5% back for gas/grocery/drugstore and we don't know if getting gas at Sam's Club/Costco counts for the 5% back. I know Citicard says warehouse purchases only get you 1% back but is the gas seperate?

You can't buy Costco gas with a card outside of an ATM card or American Express, atleast the last time I checked.

costco doesn't take visa or mastercard, so i don't see how you could use a citibank anything with them

the gas pumps only take debit cards or AmEx (i guess, i don't have one)

my guess is because there are fees associated with Visa and MC that would lower their profit margin.

How about Sam's Club gas? Sam's Club gas stations take Visa / MC so that works with the Citicard Dividends card.

There are actually Citi branded AMEX cards, in fact there is a Citi Dividend AMEX.

That might work.

As for Costco not taking Visa/MC I'm sure they have a hell of a deal worked out with AMEX. AMEX fees are normally much higher than Visa/MC (which is why so many vendors won't take it).

I guess I found the answer. If you log on to your Citi account online and click on your statement, you can click on the amount charged in each transaction, it gives you details about what kind of merchant category you used your card at.

Sam's Club Gas is a "Merchant Category AUTOMATED GAS DISPENSER "

They might see an increase in sales, but by going with Amex only they're able to get benefits including lower transaction rates than the other may have been able to offer. These benefits probably outweigh (sp?) the increase in sales.

According to my Amex summary, BJ's gas isn't separated from the regular store, so I'd assume the same goes for Sam's and Costco.

I have Amex and Costco has two separate categories on my statement: Costco Gas and Costco Warehouse.
