Does retail (boxed) Athlons include a fan?

Yes.

Comes with a crappy thermal pad and an AMD sticker (not Athlon, just AMD, at least that is for the two that I have bought.) Get some goof off and clean it (unless you are not using grease of course), or just buy an OEM and find a fan that ships without a pad.

Yes, and the fans are pretty quiet and pretty good. The 1GHz model beats a super orb by like 6C (Yes superorbs suck, but...)

i dunno about quiet and good..the hs/fan that came with my duron last year, the only retail processor i was ever suckered into buying, well...that was major crapiness and had a loud, high-pitched wine besides.

And I guess there is no overheating "problems" when using the bundled hsf. I mean, if AMD included those...

The fan and thermal pad that AMD ships with their retail boxed processors are great for normal operation. Not designed for overclocking or things of that nature.

I disagree with people saying that thermal pads aren't very nice for overclocking. Again, remember that AMD and Intel officially support thermal pads and not stuff like Artic Silver.

The thermal pad on my GlobalWin WBK38 does me no harm... 1.2GHz Athlon OCed to 1.4GHz and my processor temperature NEVER rises above 52 celcius. During normal operation (Outlook, Hauppauge TV software, and IE 5.5 open), my temperature is always around 48 or so. Granted I added some more fans to my already fan-filled case and I have a Delta sitting on my heatsink but still.

Of course Artic Silver helps knock off a few degrees but thermal pads do the trick as well.
