Does quitting smoaking cause weight gain?

I believe smoking lowers your craving for food, so yes, in a sense you'd lose weight.

As for gaining weight, it depends if your eating habbits changed.

Q. Will I gain weight if I stop smoking?

Not everyone gains weight when they stop smoking.

On average, people who quit smoking gain only about 10 pounds.

You are more likely to gain weight when you stop smoking if you have smoked for 10 to 20 years or smoked one or more packs of cigarettes a day.

You can control your weight while you quit smoking by making healthy eating and physical activity a part of your life.

Although you might gain a few pounds, remember you have stopped smoking and taken a big step toward a healthier life.

fvck me, only 10 pounds?

I take it that's not much in America

People are known to gain weight from quitting... I've heard a lot of different reasons for it (changes in metabolism, etc), but IMHO its mostly because you look for other things to do to "fill in" your previous habit, and eating is a big one.

Just watch what you eat for awhile. Exercise helps a lot.

Yeah but I'd rather fvck a girl who was 10 pounds overweight than one with fvcked up chicklets.😛

it's been 7 days since I quit now. I just noticed today that I've gained 6 lbs since then. I've been riding my bike about 60 miles a week for the past month, so I don't understand why I'm gaining weight.

You're going to die from being overweight, you might as well start smoking again.

my god. At that rate you'll gain 300 pounds in a year. :Q

Quitting smoking will allow you to increase aerobic exercise intensity. In the long run this could help you build muscle weight and lose fat. In the short run you are likely to experience a small drop in metabolic rate for a short period. Most weight gain from quitting probably comes from eating during cravings.

I hope not. 300 lbs is almost twice my current weight. (180)

Hang in there. Eat and workout normally. You're parting with a very close friend... Some fluctuation in weight is normal. I am a 10 year, 1.5 - 2 packs a day ex-smoker who is apporaching his 2 year non-smoking anniversary.

When I quit, I did gain ~10-15 pounds. For me, right off the bat, my sense of smell and taste sharpened so that eating became more pleasaurable, hence I would eat more. The novely soon wears off. Also, my cravings or oral fixations were satisfied with food... Eventually, the cravings cease as does the need to satisfy them.

Are you eating more instead of smoking? Find something else if that's the case. Like gum. Or coffee, but don't get hooked on caffeine instead, either.

what about starting smoking, does it cause weight loss? I'm confused and getting fatter by the minute.
LOL!

I don't know. I just remember that my high school teacher smoked a lot, yet she was slender. The same is true for others. I also heard something about smoking and thinness. The original explanation I heard was that smoking reduced your craving for food.
However, I see fat people who also smoke a whole lot. My neighbor is a good example. She, in fact, used to be slender before it appears her smoking habit got worse. She's quite fat now and all she does is smoke ... but I guess she hasn't stopped eating or drinking!

Last time I quit (march) I gained 10 lb., although the previous times I've quit I haven't noticed as much of a gain.
I quit again, once and for all 11 days ago, and I'm trying to keep an eye on my diet to make sure this doesn't happen again.
In your case, some of it may be attributable to water gain, since smokers will tend to substitute a cigarette for water when they are thirsty.
Careful how much soda you drink, and other than that, just keep an eye on the weight. Too soon to be worried. 🙂

I'm not eating any more than I was, but I am drinking more coffee. I used to drink 3 cups a day now I'm drinking about 5.

yes nicotine is well known for suppressing hunger.

In certain circles, there are non-smokers who've taken to chewing nicotine gum as a weight loss aid. I don't know if that's a great idea, although it beats cigs by a mile.

That was supposed to be a joke. 😀

IIRC the tobacco companies put hunger inhibitors into the cigarettees. Another reason to stop people from quitting......

Just take the hunger inhibitor and not the ciggies, you would be better off.
