ahha maybe...i'm not indian, but i can tell u this...

in korea..how many kim's and lee's are there?! almost everyone is! frekain a...there's like no point in having a surname in korea.....except for me, because i'm like the only true Yang in korea...there's this other yang, but the chinese character for it, although pronounciation is the same, is different, and i'm probably the only dude from korea w/ that yang...

heheh i have several indian friends and two of them who aren't patels are always ragging on the one who is a patel saying patels are good for nothings and things of that nature.

Actually I knew a Korean Yang in high school

Hell no.

Patel is common name for Indians in east Coast of US specially NY/NJ/PA/CT. You just see a lot of them.

They are Gujurati, from the western state of gujrath in India. There is a joke about them in US : If one patel comes to US, his entire village ends up there..as well.

Just like Anglo Saxon/Germanic surnames, Hindu Indian last names tell you what the peron's caste, occupation and geographical origin he is from.

Patel = farmer caste/occupation

Geographical Origin = Western state of Gujrath, some parts of Maharatsra mostly.

Plese do not generalize Indians with Patels 😀

One in 6 people on earth is an indian .. so it is really very ethnically & racialy diverse.

well, in north india.

patel also can be used to refer to a group, usually an upper-middle class or lower-upper class merchant.

the last name Kim makes up 22 percent, which is equivalent to almost 10 million people, while those surnamed with Lee account for 14 percent

gawddamn....sheesh...freakin...22 percent, and 14 percent...so essentialy 36% of the korean population in korea is either a lee or kim...that means...1/3 people u see in the streets are either a lee or kim in korea :Q :Q :Q ...well towards the end of that article, it kinda explains why..aha..dang..........ohoh,...my gramps told me i'm part chinese....so i guess i'm not 100% korean....just that some yang dude from china decided to live in korea and bone a korean chic and many many years later out comes me! yay! and posts this post! yay! nef! a neffer in the making....:: sigh :: yes....i should sleep now

My neighbors on both sides of me are Patels. 🙂

Patels are known for being Merchants. A bit shady. They are known to be shrewd etc.

The pattern of social classes in Hinduism is called the "caste system." It is being practised in India since thousands of years. In olden days, people who belonged to certain caste were supposed to do only certain business. One of the classes that are merchants is "patels". A lot of Patels migrated to USA in early 70s and 80s. They bring a lot of their relatives from India to USA. These people are generally hard working, money minded and shrewd. 🙂

One of my professors who's last name is Singh told me that was the Jones of India. 🙂

I also thought Singh was the most common surname.

No. Punjab is a state in India where there are a lot of Sikhs. Text
They usually have their last name "Singh"
