I was just having this argument with my parents. They said that one drink would put you over the legal limit (assuming you weight 150+).

It's always been my general rule of thumb that one drink you're fine and an hour wait for every next beverage.

Just to clarify....

the one drink per hour is a "general rule of thumb". It doesn't mean it's fact. Every person reacts differently.

a lightweight 150 pound male is gonna get hammered off of a few drinks within 2 hours.

Basically, you're parents are right.

Define a few :D

And if you read the thread, no, they were not correct. The consensus was that a 150lb male will generally not get near .08 with one drink.

It depends on the person.

one drink "can" put a light person (150 pounds) over the limit. not likely at all, but can.

two drinks within an hour are pushing it for somebody that small.

Of course that person would be dead due to lose of blood. It is simple not physical possible for one drink to raise the BAC level that much.

Meh, we always called the night after giving blood "cheap night".

A few beers = smashed.

So .... be responsible. If you drink, don't drive. If you have 1, and feel "normal", then you're probably OK, but don't take any stupid risks ....

That's the point I was going to make. I can guarentee you that one drink in 1 hour will NOT put you over the legal limit. If you have no experience drinking though, you could feel buzzed with a .03 like BurnItDwn said. There is a difference between being "legal" and being "safe". I have a tolerance, therefore in reality I can be safe with a BAC of .1 but I would not be legal. Someone else may never drink and although they are legal with a BAC of .06 they are not safe.

Anyway, ya, one drink and you will be under .08.

I took a driver education class and the guy teaching the class said that about 4 beers will put you to that limit. He didnt specify an amount of time for drinking those 4 beers though...

I'm 192 and I dont have more than 1 per hour and only then with some food inside me.
If I have three or more I always drink water for one hour before doing anything else.

I'm only 145lbs :( I usually don't "feel" anything with just two, unless I've had little or nothing to eat most of the day (makes for cheap drinking! ;)), but I wouldn't be surprised if that put me over the legal limit considering my size.

I know there's this rule of thumb thing...

Ok, but I question the effect of alcohol on me. I'm Asian, so yes I get the Asian glow. I get it insanely fast. Give me half a beer and I'll be red. Now I can definitely feel the alcohol after 1 drink/1 shot. I won't be dead passed out, but I'll feel it in me. Give me 4 and I'll be quite tipsy. Give me 7 - 8 and I'll be yacking over you.

So does that 1 shot get me to .08? I would like to say so because I would never drive after that 1 shot.

Based on every chart I've seen and everything I've read, at 150lbs you should be able to drink 3 beers within 30 minutes and still not be over the legal limit.

1 BEER= .02
1 LI Ice Tea =.10

It depends what kind of drink. It also depends on how many drinks you drink in a period of time.
If you were playing it safe, you should allow at least 1 hour for ever drink you have. Sometimes even an hour and a half, depending on your metabolism/weight.

Personally, I think having 1 beer then immediately getting in the car would not be the safest thing in the world but everyone's different. Driving with a .07 would be legal, but it probably wouldn't be safe, and you still might get a ticket.

Just because you have a low tolerance for alcohol doesn't mean you have a higher BAC.

Definitely won't get you over .08 after one drink. Unless it's like a 12oz glass of pure everclear or straight jack daniels or something like that.

Trust me when I say it's 'only' a rule of thumb' Working in the ER will prove that very quickly. I've seen patients with BAC of .125 and be completely passed and on the verge of alcohol poisoning and on the flip side, seen a drunk with a BAC of .556(yes thats correct) and if you ignored the reek of alcohol on his breath you probably would have swore he was sober. Totally coherant, walking around like he was sober.

Alcohol does funny things to people, most of all you can almost never predict how it will effect one person to the next.

However one rule of thumb does stand out, no matter how much or how little you have to drink, dont freakin drive!

It should read as .012 = 1.2% > .08%

I think...right?

That's in general. Could be different for different people.

It would take longer if you've eaten something, but it's still different for every person.

I can only speak for myself, but based on testing with a breathylzer I can have 3 normal (one-ounce alchohol) drinks in an hour and still test below the .08 limit ... of course I weigh 205lbs & tend to metabolize stuff very quickly.

This in no way implies that I could get away with 3 more drinks in the second hour without getting drunk & further I have a personal limit of two drinks if I plan on driving a car within a few hours or zero-tolerance if I'm riding my motorcycle.

.08 is just the lastest number pulled out of the sky to give you a ticket.

I would like to see hard data that shows the following:

The number of fatal/injury related crashes at .08 or less.

between .08 and .10 (the new and the old limits)

between .10 and .12 (the old and the old old)

.12 to .2

and finally .2 and above.

If anyone knows where this data is located...I would appreciate greatly to know where it is.

I can't find it.

I think the truth is the government realizes that it can appease MADD and make big money at the same time. That the current laws don't deter the .2 and above crowd.

Any guesses when it drops to .06?
