Does OC'ing make a big difference?

I cant seem to sell my x2 4200 (939) even for good price, so i figure i might just try overclocking for the first time. (if i nuke it, ill just buy the 4800 lol) Im completely clueless as to where to start or basically anything. I read the "Quick and dirty A64 clocking guide..." and was lost so that wasnt a good sign

1. Is it worth it to OC? (mostly im using photoshop/video editing with some WoW mixed in)

2. Is there some "Complete idiots guid to overclocking" resourse i can look at?

3. Is the 4600x2 = 4800x2 (939)

Overclocking the cpu will def decrease computation time when video or photo editing, the effect will probally be minimal in games since most are being limited by your video card.. Use SANDRA (google it) and test your cpu at stock speeds and then after you overclock it and you will see the difference quite easily.

My 4200+ is running at 2.618ghz. Makes a very big differance in video encoding, should help with photoshop as well. Will make a little differance in gaming, but gaming is mainly video card limited.

what I was showing you in the link was more about scalability in different type of apps....If you can get 17-20% in clock speed coupled with possible increased memory speed you could perhaps see 12-20% in gains in performance....

should i use the bios to OC or use the software in (xp home) that came with the mobo?

errrm, look for specs that you can mirror, starting from scratch on athlon 64 is stupid since so many have done it already.

I'd do it through the BIOS, but I've only done it on one computer.

If you use unstable settings in the BIOS you will fail to boot but if you use unstable settings in XP you will crash and risk screwing with data on your hard drive. Plus, doing it in windows adds more variables and thus makes it more likely to be unstable.

question: Are you guys saying its pretty ok to duplicate others overclocks with the same chip? Im thinking i might just copy someones, but from reading around it seems like there are many variables to change that could increase performance depending on combination.
