Does Nvidia 'Hybridpower' exist?

Arbie

Given the power levels of the newest Nvidia graphics boards, I'm interested in their "Hybridpower" capability. Evidently, this is or will be available when such a card is used with an Nvidia 700-series chipset. Hybridpower could be the one thing that would steer me to an Nvidia mobo.

But in all the reviews of Geforce cards, I can't yet find any that actually tested the Hybridpower feature. The only thing published is a beta report some months ago.

So.. does Hybridpower really exist yet? Does anyone know how well it works?

Thanks -

Arbie

I don't think it exists yet. IIRC, they were going to introduce this technology with the 780a boards for AMD chips, but I don't think those have made it to market yet. I think the relationship between AMD and NVIDIA has gotten somewhat strained since AMD's takeover of ATI, so it's anyone's guess as to when these boards will come out. I'm hoping NVIDIA will decide to integrate Hybrid Power onto their high end gaming cards. Basically, the card would have two gpus, and the low power gpu would take over when using 2D apps.

AMD's 780G already does this (and it's out) when paired with a low end graphics card- Hybrid Crossfire (power down discrete gpu...run off onboard). As for Nvidia, last I heard was that the 780a was delayed and is yet to hit the shelves.....I'd assume it'd be here within the next few months.

Which do you plug the monitor in to?

That's not true. 780G doesn't power down the discrete graphics card. At least from marketting material, on the ATI side it's called powerXpress and it's only available on the mobile chipset.

Talk about thread resurrection....

I would assume the onboard.

It appears it doesn't completely power down the discrete GPU, however the discrete card enters 'Powerplay' mode whereby the clocks are reduced significantly
