Does networking reduce the speed of the internet on individual computers?

I split a line using a linksys 4 port router with a switch. I used to be able to play heavy games such as Counter Strike with no proble but after I set up an network, My ping is too high to play. I am guessing that my friend whom I am sharing the line with is doing heavy downloading using kazaa. If my friend is downloading some big contents does it influence my spped as well? Is there any way to improve the spped of my line even if my friend is downloading heavy stuff?

Yep. You are sharing a set amount of bandwidth. The more he uses, the less you have.

Best way to improve the speed of your line while your friend is downloading is to unplug him from the router :)

I used to have this problem when people on the network would upload with Kazaa. With my cable modem upload cap at 128kb, it effects the download speed when you upload. Once I had everyone disable uploading, the problems with games went away and they can download as much as they want with little lag.

Edit: to disable sharing of files for kazaa, go to tools, options, traffic, and check the disable file sharing.

Isn't there some sort of software that you can use to limit bandwidth usage for certain programs?

Can be done by using Linux Box.

Windows needs expensive hardware, to do so.

My friend has no problem PLaying the game when I use the Kazaa...and download some big stuff....we both have same spec PCso I don't know why it does that.
Only different is that my pc is closer to the router.

Downloading a bunch of files without allowing people to download from you sucks. If you are d/l files, you should be sharing. Isn't that the whole idea?
